My Doc gave me Xifaxan 10 day treatment
any expirence would be of help thanks ...been in a flare since Dec.

It's made by Salix, the same manufacturer of Colazal.  Looks like it treats e-coli related diarrhea.

My GI gave me a different 10 day antibiotic, Flagyl, and seemed to very much help my bowel problems, but gave me horrid food-poisoning-like symptoms so I couldn't finish the last 6 days.  I wish I could have finished because I'm still flaring and I frequently wonder "what if" I'd been able to take the full 10 days.

My doctor gave me a 10 day treatment of Xifaxan once when I was in a flare and couldn't eat anything for days. Within 2 days, the diarrhea was gone. So even though it was a temporary solution, it at least made me functional again.

I just started Xifaxan yesterday.  I most likely will be on it long term.  So far so good.  I had been on cipro for 1 week prior, Cipro and Flagyl for 1 week before that.  Flagyl made me very naseous.  My doctor didn't think Cipro was good enough alone, so he prescribed Xifaxan.  The intestinal pain is mostly gone, my BM's are down to 4 times today from 8-10 since I started antibiotics. I don't notice any side affects yet.  My insurance covers it with a 35 dollar copay, but I noticed it was very expensive.  I've been in a flare since January and couldn't get off steriods. They wanted to put me on Remicade and MTX, but I wasn't quite ready for that.

i just finished my ten day dose of xifaxan. i didn't have any negative side effects but i didn't feel like it helped either. sorry (hopefully it is just me). now my doctor has started me on VSL #3. did your doc mention probiotics when you are done with the xifaxan. also insurance is a devil with xifaxan. how did you deal with it?

lot of gas and D's but no to much pain so i will try and make it 10 days
I am on Probiotics ...my insurance has capped out at 2,400 so i am on my own till Jan... Xifaxan are samples the Doc gave me.

I went for a second opinion at MGH in Boston.  The doctor there fought the insurance company, I didn't even need a pre-authorization.  There is some evidence that I have Crohn's disease and not UC (IBD First Step showed Crohn's marker, but not UC marker, patchy inflammation, respond well to antibiotics), so I'm thinking they told the insurance company I had Crohn's.  A 30 day supply was almost 1300 dollars, good thing it was covered.

He didn't mention probiotics, but I'm already taking one, so maybe that's why.  I take Primadophulus Reuteri.  Also, I was told I would be on the antibiotics as long as it does the job. 

Sorry it didn't work for you.  Does your insurance company cover the VSL #3? Just curious.  I looked into taking that, but it was too expensive.

xifaxin is the one antibiotic that has consistently shown effectiveness against UC. I posted a lot of evidence about it in an earlier thread (member pumpfast was taking it, I think). Enjoy the dosing-- I wish they would get Xifaxin approved for UC!

no, the insurance doesn't cover vsl #3. i am only taking it for a month (on my dr recommendation) and then i am switching to less expensive probiotics that i can actually afford.

My Dr. gave me a ten-day supply sample once for gas and bloating, worked quite well. When I said I really liked it and it worked well she gave me a prescrption for 60/month. My insurance said they'd only pay for NINE/month. They wanted like $300 to get al 60! No way. I just do without.

Stupid insurance company.
