Hey *Q*....
Regarding the wheat intolerance thing..... What do you think about the idea that it is actually the yeast in the wheat product affecting the UC? I know with me, if I eat a good "fresh" wheat product, I very rarely have any problems, but if I try any mass produced, or high yeast content, (ie pizza dough, doughnut batter) wheat product, I usually get issues.
"Issues" and "food symptoms" and "UC symptoms"..they're different to me.
High yeast products could cause gas I would think, but not UC symptoms. If one has a flaring gut, then food in general will bother them. Fermented or yeasty products could definitely exacerbate discomfort.
Describe "issues".
Any whole grain products will give me symptoms, even fresh, wholesome and homemade. I'll still eat them, but not on a large scale.
People who don't have UC may have symptoms from processed foods, lots of stuff in them to make them last longer on the shelf. Not all of us digest foods the same way or as easily.
Maybe you could see if a digestive enzyme for carbohydrates will help when you consume pizza or doughnuts.
I get severe gas and discomfort a few hours after eating bananas, although I love the taste .... most UCers don't have a problem with them. Go figure, but I avoid them for the most part.
When I was first diagnosed, I avoided foods that bothered me (high in fibre, raw foods, salads) during my functioning hours so that I'd have less discomfort. Evenings were a different matter, however....when I was "quieter", so was my gut, so I ate what I wanted then. Eventually as my UC symptoms improved, I started to consume more of a variety of foods. It all depended on where I was and what foods were available if I was eating out. It wasn't a UC-thing...it was a comfort thing. No foods made UC symptoms worse or better. Flaring was flaring.
I never starved myself, and actually saw having diarrhea so many times a day as a way to eat what I wanted....I was severely underweight.
This probably doesn't answer your question, however. lol....I'm one who doesn't support much of the food causes UC/flares theory.
