hi! you may remember yesterday i was upset that the dr. wasn't calling me back
and my daughter was in bad pain. well my gp finally got him to call us last night
after 2 days of calls. anyway he said that he really wanted do make a go of the asacol for 3 weeks
if she could before he would add steroid but if not he would start them. hmm.. i said is there any kind of pain med to help along for now, "no" i asked about tylenol, it never does anything for me, and he said ok
. well she had her 1st night of sleep in a month . Now she wants to take it again tonight, but i want to see if it was just a fluke or if it worked. but don't know if she should take it with the asacol again. anybody know if it's known to help?
don't want to stress kidneys or liver.
asacol for 10 days now 4 pills 2x daily. thank you. i know i keep posing questins but it's all so new.mybrain is going on overtime.

Tylenol is the only OTC pain reliever I know of that's approved for people with IBD. Whether or not it will help is another question... depends on how bad her pain is. As long as she's not taking high doses of it for an extended period of time, I don't think it would put undue stress on her liver.

I would agree.
Just stand CLEAR of the Ibprofin, Motrin, Advil etc.
Tylenol only.

I take tylenol a lot for arthrities bad spelling. it has never been a problem and does help when I have pain in my tummy. hope she feels better.

High intake can cause a strain on the liver and kidneys...but for how you're using it...no.

I take Tylenol and Aspirin....both OK'd by my GI....

The ones that are in liquid form do have artificial sweeteners in them, so can be contraindicated with already sore gut.

What dosage are you giving your daughter?

Has the GI not given your daughter any rectal meds?

One med called dicyclomine would help ease gut and digestive tract spasming. I wouldn't suggest anything more than 10mg dosage....

It's OK to ask as many questions....it's sometimes a much quicker result to enquiries than searching the internet...ahem..or waiting for the doc to call.. ;-)

I take anywhere from 3 to 6 Rapid Release Tylenol's a day due to the headache that Prednisone causes. icanrace is right stay clear of those and additionally do not take aspirin. My GI doctor dropped a brick when told him I was taking Bayer for pain. Said that is possible cause of last flare-up being so bad and bloody, as it thins the blood. Doctor said Tylenol is the only OTC pain reliver that is safe. Darvocet really helped me during last flare-up for abdominal pain but that is obviously not OTC. Doctor prescribed to me cause i had some extreme abdominal pain, that plus Phennigan made my nights bearable to sleep (until i had one of those violent BM's that woke me up)...

Quincy, your doctor okd Aspirin? My doctor said to stay clear of them, but i was taking a high daily dosage of Bayer for chronic back pain. This could be why he said to switch to Tylenol. Was getting bruises on my arms and legs real easy, guess was taking too many. I prefer to take Bayer myself, much better for pain reliver.

Hi,

I also take tylenol all the time for my spondylitis(arthritis) pain. It helps a little without upseting my GI tract. Should be fine. Also, I hope your daughter feels well soon.

Bmshurt.....yes, because it has no effect on my UC at all. I do get more bruising, however, if i've used it more than a day or so.

I don't take ibuprophen since a hysterectomy in '92 (I took it for period cramping..worked like a charm).

I don't take naproxen because it affects my asthma.

Tylenol doesn't even touch my headaches. He's not concerned because my c-scopes have been A-OK...as well, my UC and PSC are in a nice non-inflamed state. I heal well, and my blood clotting is good. Plus, I've had the same GI for coming on 19 years in January.

Oh, I've taken aspirin since I was 11 years old after I fell causing whiplash that resulted in wry neck and a lifetime of tension headaches.

The one symptom I get from it is more ringing in my ears...which is probably caused from the aspirin use for so long. I'm 53.....and from my perspective...salicylates are a miracle for me. Thankfully.

I do see a chiro for my neck, and that's resulted in less headaches. I use Tylenol for body pains. It's a nice juggle of "line 'em up" so that I function as best as possible.

PLEASE - It's a good thing you pushed the doctor on this issue! I really don't get why a doctor wouldn't just say, "sure, try it. It beats being in pain if it works."

I've taken Tylenol w/Codeine nearly every night for the last 2 months. My doctor (who is truly fab) says not to worry about it as long as I don't keep upping the dose.

This idea of giving the asacol three weeks (which seems fairly arbitrary to me) before starting on steroids (which I assume means Prednisone) seems off to me. Anyone else want to weigh in? I just think that:
a) Who knows how long the asacol might take to work... why did he pick 3 weeks
b) Prednisone is a crappy drug to be on and he should tell you all the risks now so you can be ready to make that decision in 3 weeks. (Doctor RARELY tell you all the problems with it.)
c) It seems silly not to try Cortifoam or a cortisone enema first before going all the way to oral steroids. They have fewer side effects and would work right now while the asacol may or may not be kicking in.

Ok, that's my 2 cents. I think that this doctor who doesn't call back sounds annoying. I'm glad you're taking control of the issue and getting the info you need here. Any luck with the doctors in NYC? :)

I'll chime in here too....it can take a while for the 5ASA meds to start showing progress...and I would always encourage both oral AND rectal together.

I'd take going on pred as a threat rather than a positive....there's no reason for a 3 week or any time limit for that matter unless you're getting worse on the meds and showing absolutely NO improvement.

using oral 5ASA alone will not help the rectal inflammation that all of us will have regardless of the extent up into the colon.

I'm with the majority here - I take Tylonel frequently but not excessively (2-6 a day) to help with my headaches. And it's perfectly safe for Uc'ers. In the past, I would take Darvocet but I would only use that sparingly. It constipates me because it slows my colon down too much.

And pose as many questions as you like! You can't learn if you don't ask right?

I like the 8 hour time release Extra Strength Tylenol.  I take up to four a day and the Dr. said that amount would not hurt my liver.  But, I'm an adult - I'd ask about how much is safe according to her weight and age.  The pharmacist will probably know that as well as the doctor and the pharmacist is more accessible.  Good luck!

Hi! I take asacol and tylenol is my favorite aspirin. i prefer the cool caplet kind, not that it makes a difference, and i am about your daughter's age. I believe Tylenol is safe enough, but i don't know about taking it everyday. if it helps the pain or lets her sleep take it.

sara, thanks for asking if she is any better. i believe that she is going less frequently
but her blood count dropped so the bleeding is still a problem. she will be home in a week and i will know better when i see her. bu the tyleno did work for her pain and helped her get some sleep.
i hope you are feeling well. can you tell me how long it took to get your 1st flare uner control and what did it for you/

I take Tylenol now after years of Excedrin use.  It seems I have to wait a little longer for relief from headaches and pains but the tradeoff is much safer.

I take Tylenol quite a bit too.  It isn't the best, but it's better than nothing.  Now I have Darvocets though, trying not to use them too much, but it feels so wonderful to be completely pain free.  about the Asacol, I remember when I took it, it took 2 months to see any change on it....

PLEASE - I was first diagnosed in March of this year. I'm still not completely in remission (my last c-scope showed mild inflammation in the rectum only and I still go about 3-4 times a day), but am much, much better than I was at first (I was going over 20xa day with tons of blood and severe abdominal pain). I was first put on Asacol 2 pills, 3 times a day and a course of Flagyl (an antibiotic..I think he gave me this just in case I had an infection along with the UC, but I'm not sure). The Asacol helped tremendously with the pain and bleeding after a couple weeks, but I was still having other symptoms. Then, my Gastro doc. increased the Asacol dose to 8 pills/day and I started Rowasa enemas nightly. Later, he increased my Asacol to 12 pills per day and that's what I'm at now. I still do Rowasa about once a week. So, basically I'm still trying to get into complete remission, but I feel almost normal now. I'm pretty lucky that the Asacol worked so well for me. It did take me a couple months to get rid of all bleeding, and then a couple times it went away for a month, only to come back later. So, it's definitely a disease where patience helps. Hmmm...that was probably more information than you wanted! =)
