I just left my GI's office for my appt, I told him about my problem with Insurance not covering my Asacol and I told him I could afford Generic Asacol from Canada, or Lialda out of pocket. He told me to wait a few min, then he came back with a 3month supply of Asacol and told me to check back in 10 weeks and if my situation has not changed, he will have another 3 month supply for me. He told me one way or another, he will make sure I don't go without medication. I almost cried right there!!! That was a great suprise and a great present for me from him.

It's nice to know that most of our Dr.s do have our best interest in mind!
My GI used to do the same thing for me with Azathioprine. I even had insurance but my copay was $35

Mine does the same thing for me.  My insurance only covers up to $500 a year in meds - with us that's about 1 months worth of meds!!  I mentioned that to him once - and since then whenever I go he loads me up with everything I need.  Last time, he was giving me a box of colazal (72 day supply) I told him I had enough at home - he said - well I have a lot now so take it anyway so you don't have to worry till the next time you see me.

Sodbuster -  I agree - the best present ever!!

p.s. I haven't paid for my colazal in almost 2 years already.

It pays to state the issues...the docs are given meds from the companies to benefit patients in your situation..

I hope they work for you....and not to push the envelope, but maybe he can swing some rectal meds as well?

Thanks, I just thought it would be nice to share this. I like my DR, I have to drive about 75miles to him since I moved, but when ya find someone you like and trust, I say keep them. Hey Quincy, I have a hard time using rectal med's due to the fact that I drive a truck long haul, and if I can't keep it in me, I would never make it to the bathroom. I have been in remission for a yr now, and this is the longest I have ever been. I do use probotics, and if were not for this site, I would never have even heard of them. I love this site, it is just packed with useful info and advice. So, To all, Happy Holidays, and may Santa bring relief to us all!!!!

It's a nice feeling isn't it...way back when I first got sick my hubby didn't have insurance through his work at the time and my colon and rectom surgeon loaded me up with cortifoam all the timewhich at the time was 120.00 cdn for one box, what a life-saver he was. He'd tell me when I ran out just to book an appt and he'd load me up again...even if I didn't have to see him for anything...afterall, he was a surgeon who only dealt with patients he was going to operate on, he often saw me because I had already had hemmie surgery done on my perianal crohns skin tags which was a big NO NO by another surgeon, so he helped looked after me anyways...he felt bad because he told me that particular surgeon that performed my hemheroidectomy (which I never should have had) trained under him and she should have known better than to make the mistake between hemmies and perianal crohns skin tags (aka: elephant ears).

Quincy - most docs don't have large stacks of enemas as the reps don't like to carry them cuz they're bulky.  Canasa they usually have.  And I've gotten those too!!

Sodbuster, I'm so glad to read that you got such a wonderful present-- just what you really needed. It totally bugged me to learn that you had to switch to sulfasalazine for financial reasons-- because when I took it in the 1980s it made me photosensitive so I know it's not the best oral 5ASA for most UCers. Back 25 yrs ago it was the ONLY alternative to oral steroids.

I also got a nice UC-treatment gift recently when my gastro dropped a venipuncture charge from my bill after I mentioned that my insurance will not cover it. Help like this means a lot when the patient has a chronic ailment especially. / Old Hat

my eye dr did that for a woman that used to work for me, he began 19 years ago and still makes sure she has medication even if she can't afford it,he saved her vision. she thinks he is an angel! he charges her very little for the visit since she can't pay much and he says it's his way of giving back! i'd say there are drs that do care about the human!
