I've heard IBDers can benefit from up to 7-10 billion cfus a day. I think alot of folks that don't see results are either taking an ineffective strain or are simply not consuming enough.

Thanks again UC Mom for the post. I've seen little negative effects of probiotics and it is useful to know if there is information to the contrary--something to investigate further. I agree with Red that you go with works, bottom line. I try to think as much like a scientist as I can, but most of the time it makes the most sense to just go with what works, wheither or not it makes sense. This may also demonstrate that certain probiotics work better for different individuals (possibly a genetic component).

I am new to this bacteria theory but would it make sense
to get probiotics from a couple sources at the same time.
Why stop at just a pill?
If you are going to take probiotic pill may as well eat lots
of food with natural good bacteria.
Does that make sense or am I off base?
Also does friendly bacteria also help to kill off fungi?
I think I read that some where but can not find it again.

That makes sense to me blessteve. I take a probiotic caplet and eat lots of yogurt and drink DanActive and/or Naked probiotic juice (it's really tasty!) almost everyday. I don't know the answer to your fungi question.

Plenty of probiotics can act as a kind of antibiotic to other bacteria (usually the harmful ones) and I am pretty sure this affects yeast/fungi as well. For instance, some (if not all) Lactobacillus bacteria produce lactic acid, making the environment less hospitable to some harmful microbes. Plus, having more of the 'good guys' in your system that manage to take up residence in the intestine can crowd out all forms of the 'bad guys'. I can probably find out which probiotics are best to take for fungal issues, if you like; just let me know.

I believe you are on the right track Steve. Both food sources and supplements are the way to go.
