Hi,

You may recognize me from the CD forum. I have CD but my disease acts like UC with lots of bleeding and such. So I have started a med that I notice is approved for UC, Colazal. I wondered if it makes the symptoms worse before they improve? I have only been on it for a few days, but I feel like the urgency and frequency(blood and mucus,not stool) is much worse.

So thanks for letting me post here. Hope it doesn't bother anyone. My initial Diagnosis was UC for many years until the Pillcam test actually!

You're more than welcome here, Sharann. I've been known to visit the Crohn's board, myself. I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses to this, but I'll be the first. I had no problem when I started Colazal, but I think soe others have.

Have you taken 5-ASA meds before? Do you know what part of your colon is now inflamed by CD? Colazal dissolves well within the colon so many doctors believe it is most effective in treating left-sided UC. If you have inflammation in the ileum or ascending colon, Pentasa would likely be a more helpful med to treat that, unless you have any intolerance to 5-ASA compounds. An increase in urgency & bleeding with Colazal merits a phone call to your gastro, I think. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Yes I have mainly disease in my left colon about the last 30 cm or so(seems like nuthin!). I have some small bowel involvement but mild. In between those 2 areas I am ok. So I guess it does go down pretty far left. Main symptoms are bleeding etc. No surgeries, fistulas or obstructions(knock wood). I have had pancreatitis from Asacol so I was stopped. So far I have no pain with Colazal, just more bleeding and awful gas(excuse the descriptives)

I have crohns-colitis as well (CD affecting the colon) so I often visit here as well because there are the similarities with symptoms, treatments, ect...and because this is such a nice group too.

Of course you welcome to post here! When I started Colazal, my symptoms got way worse for about 2 weeks until my body adjusted to it. Then it turned everything around for me. And don't worry about using "gross" talk......with the nature of an IBD, that can't be helped.

I don't know if it would be the same for CD, but for some people Colazal can exacerbate into UC like symptoms that don't improve. It was this for my case. I took colazal for 3 weeks before I couldn't stand it any more. I went from feeling fine with no bleeding to having more blood than ever before. the D was about the same as a regular flare, but i was actually frightened by the blood, so I stopped and my dr said that it might have been the colazal making it worse. I felt better after just 2 days of being off. You can give it a few weeks and see if it gets better like it did for Red, and if not ask your Dr if maybe its the colazal making things worse.
