went to GI today scince Ive been bleeding for 6 weeks, he switched me from asacol to colazel, he said lets try this first and see if it works, if not he wants to take a look...ugh, hope it works!

Good luck and hopefully this will get your bleeding under control. Just a word of warning, I was on Asacol for many years when it stopped working for me so my GI switched me to Colazal. When I first started taking it, I had increased D, headache and sort of weird out of it feeling - I compared it to feeling like I was walking in a cloud in fluffy slippers :) But once my body became used to the change, all that went away - it took about 2 weeks for my body to accept it.

wow, I just had terrible diareah then i remembered your post saying it caused diareah for you!  (didnt see any blood though!)

Just wondering, Red_34 & Lori, did you go right on the full dose of Colazal, 3 capsules at a time? I started at 1 capsule per dose, then increased to 2 per dose for another couple days, then went up to 3 per dose. That was the way my 1980s gastro had me start on new 5ASAs: start low & gradually increase to see how the body adjusts.

The Colazal gave me an exceptionally dry mouth at 1st, but I kept drinking water thoughout the day & otherwise did better with it than on any other oral 5ASA. But I cannot tolerate it at full-dose for longer than 9-10 weeks w/o developing side effects such as puffy eyelids. yes, full dose. I went from 9-12 asacol a day to 9 colazal.

Full dose for me too...went from 9 Asacol to 9 Colazal with no break in period.

I started full dose both when I started Asacol and when I started Colazal.

Lori, I hope the Colazal does the trick for you.

Day 4 of colazal, still diareah and blood with each stool. Still no other symptoms, I dont feel sick. Maybe once I get use to the colozal the diareah and bleeding will stop. I bet it is hard to stop bleeding with diareah... Red you said about 2 weeks..Did the bleeding stop when the diareah stopped?

Yes, once my body adjusted to it. The D slowly tapered down to where I was only going once or twice a day with semi solid and no bleeding or pain. I think in some Colazal doesn't allow for fully formed solid bm's. I was doing great on only Colazal after the switch (for about 6 months or so) but then my lovely daughter decided to share her stomach bug with me which threw me into a year long horrible flare! :)

when you say a year long flare, do you mean bleeding and diareah but you could still go on with life, or you were very sick for a year?

I was flaring when I went on Colazal - the Colazal put me in a 6 month remission. When I got the stomach bug, it threw me into a nasty flare - bleeding, D, etc. and life pretty much was miserable. I guess that flare was too much for just Colazal to handle so I had to start Colocort. I was on and off them for about 8 months when both me and my GI decided to try me on 6mp to see if I could get the flare under control. That was the main thing that got me away from the steroids and back to living.

ugh the diareah is so bad today and there for the bleeding is worse, I think I will switch back to asacol and call the dr in the morning.
