Visiting England and concerned about norovirus

Hi everyone,

I'm travelling to England today and am concerned about the norovirus which is hitting England.  I'll be at school and have a hospital visit planned (both are high-risk areas and I have to go to both - exam at school and blood test at hospital to monitor progress on azathioprene).

General guidance is to avoid contact with an infected person, contaminated food or drink or touching contaminated surfaces or objects.  I'll definitely be carrying anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel.  What other precautions can I take?

I'm on prednisone at the moment and have only recently managed to get a flare under control so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just stay off of the cruise ships and you should be fine. Primarily the Cunard Line ship and the Carnival Lines Liberty. I would especially avoid the Queen Elizabeth 2.

xtremefit. I've never been on a cruise; but sure, I'll keep your advice in mind should I plan on taking a cruise on Cunard, Carnival, Queen Elizabeth 2 when I'm in England.

This is the bug i've been telling you my family have been struggling to shake.We caught it on 20 th December. So far it hasn't caused a major increase in symptoms for me. But i have been vomiting for nearly two weeks. Its a nasty bug, one day you feel great and you are convinced it is gone and by that night you are ill again.My kids have had the bug and got better only to catch it again.
It's so widespread at the minute you will do well not to come into contact with someone who has it unfortunatly.But it honestly isn't the worst tummy bug me or my family have ever caught it just seems to be very hard to get rid off.I live in iReland

Rio, the two most important steps in avoiding viruses like this are frequent hand washing (soap and running water is best) and keeping your hands away from your face. An incredible number of contagious diseases are picked up on our hands and then infect us when we put our hands around our mouths, noses or eyes.

Handwashing, wipes, and I wear gloves and wash them frequently. I'm not sure if Zicam would help for this virus, but it couldn't hurt. Just swab the inside of your nose before you get on the plane or before you go into the hospital etc. You might even ask for a mask -- I think the Japanese frequent mask wearing during the flu season.

If you carry a little bottle of antibacterial lotion around with you this may help reduce the risk of infection.Use it whenever you come into contact with anyone or any surface whilst here.

I have to travel to a local hospital to see a Gastroenterologist next Wednesday.I'm also a little concerned about this and it would be a bitter irony to catch it while seeing someone about bowel disease!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Silent Lucidity, it definitely would be bitterly ironic to catch this on a visit to the local Gastro clinic - well, better to expect (and prepare for) the unexpected!

Antibacterial sanitizer won't protect you against a virus...they only protect against bacteria.

This virus sure sounds nasty. Hope you don't get it.
