According to my doctor, absorption from the colon depends upon the degree of inflammation. Since inflammation brings along increased blood flow, the greater the inflammation, greater the blood flow. With this increased blood flow comes diffusion of the medicine into the systemic circulation. The doctor says that "maximum" absorption would be 50% in the severest case of inflammation. Depending on the total dose of the rectal steroids (i.e. I'm taking 100 mg / 60 mL in the Cortenemas), there still could be a significant amount of systemic absorption. 50% of 100 mg is still 50 mg of hydrocortisone! There are of course a lot of variables, including inflammation, how long the enema is retained, how much of the enema is actually inserted. Just my thoughts. Hopefully your daughter doesn't experience any side effects! Good luck.
