I had forgotten all about this thread, wow it's been close to two years since I wrote that first message!

Since then, I miscarried at 7 weeks in late 2008, and then this year had a blissfully uneventful full term pregnancy. My UC was practically non-existent for most of the 9 months. Our daughter is now close to 3 months old and is a perfect, healthy baby so far as we can tell at this early stage.

I'm breastfeeding her while on the imuran, too, after getting the ok from our pediatrician. I don't dump any of my milk.

So glad to see this thread is still useful to you ladies with UC out there!! Best of luck to all.

I stumbled on this page & am curious if anyone has any information on Imuran and its effects on sperm. My husband took Imuran for about 5 years and stopped on Aug 1, 2009. I just found out I am approximatley 5 weeks pregnant. He was told to wait about 3 months after stopping Imuran to try to conceive. I haven't seen a high risk OB but am wondering if I should. Any thoughts?

Hi All,

I am 25 year old with and after the birth of my 5 yr old son I was diagnosed with Crohn's Dis, I was waiting 3 years to be diagnosed after having 8 anal fissus I finally was told I had Crohn’s. I would love to have another baby but, am scared of the damage that my 150mg Imuran can cause.

 

Could someone please give me advise. Thanks Melissa

I found an article about a study they had done on Imuran and breastfeeding if anyone is interested:

You can download the whole article for free. In summary, what it says is that a certain dose of imuran does not pass through breastmilk. Larger doses might.

I am so thankful to find this site! Just found out I am pregnant and I am on both Imuran and Remicaide. I am very concerned about the effects of these medicines on baby! My doctor helped reassure me by saying that all other doctors are going to tell me to come off the medicine, but he is telling me to stay on. I know the remicaide is well known in the pregnant world, but what about Imuran as well? I feel that being on two strong medicines can cause problems. Any advice you have to offer? I go Wednesday for another infusion.

Hey Guys,
Just need a little advice on pregnancy and Imuran.
Were planning on starting a family after dealing with UC for 2 years and finally in remission!!! I'm a little worried about not being able to breastfeed. I am on 100mg Imuran and 5mg prednizone but hope to be off them by christmas.
Do you ladies think this is really safe ?

It was great to see this thread today, as I'm meeting my new GI tomorrow after moving to Toronto and want to discuss pregnancy. I'm currently on 100mg of Imuran (was on 6MP until September, but had to switch due to the ongoing drug shortages in Canada), and doing relatively well.

Part of my concern is that I have bad reactions to steroids like prednisone--last time I was put on steroids, I experienced hallucinations. The doctors put me on antipsychotics to manage those side effects, but those medications would not be an option if I were pregnant. It seems like there's no one answer for everyone, and that it's really about balancing the potential risk of Imuran against the potential risk of a flare.

I am interested in learning more about how Imuran is more likely to be passed through breast milk than the placenta. What are others' experiences with that?

I see this thread was from many years ago, but I am on Imuran now and considering pregnancy. Can you all comment on how your "Imuran pregnancies" went?? Worried about the baby...

LWW1993 - you sound just like me! And you're the same age as me! How old is your little one? Sounds like he/she is the same age as my daughter. I, like you, had a uneventful and happy pregnancy. I was on Asacol throughout. my daughter was two weeks overdue and weighed a good 7 pounds and 4 ounces. She is still thriving and seems to be very bright. However it has been approx. 17 months since giving birth and I have been having minor flares every few months or so. The flares last year after giving birth were annoying but controlled by rectal meds and upping my asacol. however I am going through a mild flare again since March and I just can not get control over it! After three types of mesalasines failed to work, I was placed on Imuran 100mg. I have been on Imuran since mid June (so approx. 12 weeks) and I think I may be slowly feeling the effects. Not sure yet as I am still having symptoms such as abdominal discomfort on my left side and looser stools but stools seems to be forming a little more. I am only having two BM's a day anyways. However I did have to have my dose increased to 125mg approx. 3 weeks ago as I was not at therapeutic level (which is probably why it didn't work before).

My husband and I want to try for our second baby next year and I shall be Imuran during that time. I have been told it is safe and fine to take throughout pregnancy by my GI doc and specialist nurse. The nurse was not too sure about me bf on it but my GI doc said its probably ok and I could pump and dump my first milk of the day, if I wanted to be on the safer side.
