So I'm sitting here at work and I was feeling a little gassy just now, probably from the powdered mini donuts I ate earlier. But since I am behind a desk that is behind a door, and I was in the back area doing some filing and no one was nearby or expected to be, I let some of it out... And then what happens? Literally RIGHT after, my boss comes up behind the desk and asks for some files to review for internal applications!! There's no way he didn't smell it and there was also no way it could have been someone else skull redface   I just gave him the files as fast as possible and tried to not look mortified.

Feel free to console me with embarrassing stories of your own, haha.

Thanks for the laugh. Just forget about it. "It" happens. Everybody poops. Everybody farts. I'd avoid the donuts from now on, though. LOL

I know, haha. I'm just the typical "girly girl" and I've never even farted (openly) in front of my boyfriend of 3 years, which is quite a feat with UC! :P

'Tis a fact of life that we all fart - sometimes it's a little more inconvenient then other times! I was in an aisle once (I'm sure everyone has a similiar story to mine) and I had bad gas. So no one else was in the aisle so I had to let it go because it was starting to hurt my gut. It as a SBD, but wouldn't you know it? Some georgous guy walks around the corner and down the aisle as I was rounding the corner to leave that aisle - I tried to avoid him thru out the entire store because I know he knew it was me!

Hahah, Red I've definitely done the same thing- it seems like EVERY time I go to the store I instantly have to go to the bathroom or get gassy.

What's weird is it's really prominent with bookstores- I could be in complete remission and the second I step foot in Barnes & Noble I have to run to the bathroom with diarrhea. And it happens every single time I go in a bookstore, but I can't figure out why.

I had been letting UC gas out into a chair at work for an entire summer. One day a group of my coworkers started looking everywhere in the lab, moving everything, looking behind everything trying to figure out what that smell was or where it was coming from.

I was so embarrassed, I acted like I was helping them look.

Oh that's the worst when someone points it out! Hey, at least no one grabbed your chair and said "Here's where it's coming from!!" :P

Last month a colleague brought her 2 yr-old twin daughters to our dept.'s annual holiday party. Everything went fine for the 1st 90 minutes or so-- then one twin pooped her pants & refused to be changed!!!!! ("The terrible twos", as people say!) Well, things got fairly smelly by half an hour later when daddy walked in the door: HE was immediately accepted by the little pooper as her diaper-changer! A reminder that all kinds of mishaps/tantrums get forgotten/forgiven when a person is young & small ... hey! The facts of life we would rather not have to cope with! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Did you read Bennies post here at this forum? "Never hold your farts in, they will travel up your spine and into your brain. That's where crappy ideas come from."

So next time anyone here farts in public then just tell them this...it'll be a good ice-breaker if nothing eles...it sure made me laugh!

I'm actually serious on this -

I have noticed that although i hardly ever get the need to use the restroom urgently when I am out of the house, SEVERAL times when I have gone into BOOKSTORES this urge has not only been there, but been particularly strong.

In particular, I am thinking of 2 used bookstores near my work I frequent.  Like clockwork, the second I set foot in the store I get hit with urgency.

I had been speculating as to why this was.

My theory is that an inhaled allergen attacks us in stores where we suddenly feel sick. We have chemical sensitivities that cause a quick (& inappropriate) immune response. It could be the bldg's HVAC system, cleaning fluid fumes, or something given off by the merchandise. In the case of used books, it could be decomposition of acidic paper. I say this because spending an hour in one particular dept store made me very ill with acute respiratory symptoms on 2 occasions ca. 6 weeks apart. Each time the discomfort hit me within the 1st couple hours after I exited the bldg. Very weird, but definitely connected. I started wondering if some especially potent disinfectant was used to prevent Legionnaire's Disease microbes from growing in the ventilation system there. It took me 3-4 days to overcome the sore throat, sneezing, watery eyes, & constantly runny nose I got in addition to purchased items! / Old Hat

I try not to fart in front of my husband not ez during the day but at night while he's sleeping I can let 'em rip and he has no clue, I do this b/c normally mine do not smell and his are horrible so I don't want him farting in front of me, anyhoo.......

The other morning I let one rip near the bathroom and man did it stink and then my husband walked right into it and I could hear him saying how gross it was and he was like darn the cat's are smelly and I just started giggling.

I sometimes have to let out farts at work.  I try to keep them silent and use the chair to muffle them.  One particarly bad day I had a lot of bloating and thought I could let out a silent one a little at a time.  Well once it got started there was no holding it back and it was not silent at all.  Although nobody said anything I know everyone within earshot heard it.  Oh well.

As far as why bookstores cause urgency - maybe its a mental assocaition thing.  We spend so much time reading in the bathroom that books instantly make you want to go.

My husband cheers on my farts. We are strange i suppose but he tries to make what was embarrasing for me (gas, spending lots of time in the potty,e ct) funny and fun. I think i can talk more openly about my bodily functions with my husband than with any doctor i've ever had. I got lucky.

He has never had health problems but as a small child he had a fear of public restrooms. Several times he pooped his pants becuase he just couldn't use a public restroom, so he knows how it feels to have an accident. BTW he has no problem with using public restrooms now.

I teach & cannot let one go when I want or need to. 4th graders can be unforgiving about things like that. They would laugh forever & tell everyone they see in the hall what happened. Luckily, I have a bathroom right across the hall from my classroom. So I just run over there & back as fast as I can.

I think my hubby loves that I am farty now, he was the only one before -- well, I was just more discrete. Can't be discrete any more! we have three dogs, so if there's any stinkiness involved we just blame the poor dogs.

My partner at work can't believe how bad I am. We can have both windows in the car open and be driving with a crosswind and he still complains. He said he might file a workers compensation claim.......lol

And one time I got into the elevator with 5 other officers and we had to go up 16 floors on a really really slow elevator and I let out a terrible one at the second floor and they all knew it was me, and they were all getting sick from it, but nothing could be done.

I think they wanted me to take the stairs down. lol

I've not had much of a gas problem and couldn't relate to some of the posts on the forum about people dealing with these issues UNTIL I tried a herbal remedy for a few weeks.  I was sitting by myself at a corner table in the local Starbucks and just had to fart.

The smell was so bad that even I couldn't stand it and had to leave the table and walk discretely out the store.  As always happens in these cases, as I was walking out, one of the Starbucks Associates decided to sweep the floor starting with the exact spot where I had been sitting.  

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her drop her brush and scamper like a rabid dog to call all the other associates.  The smell was so bad, that I think she wanted them to 'smell it, to believe it'......

It seems I've lost all shame since being diagnosed with UC, so all that's left to say is avoid gassy foods; but till then, fart on! fart strong!

I have another theory about the bookstore causing people to have to run to the bathroom...

If you are like me, I usually have a book or magazine on the back of the toilet for those lovely flare up days. You know your colon has a mind of it's own right? Your colon is acting like a kid in a candy store. All of those lovely books and magazines....must be time to poop!

HAHAHAHH I've farted three times reading this thread!!!!!!!

GUILTY!!!!  I used to have terrible gassiness at work, thankfully once I got off Aciphex that got better.

However!  I have my gassy days and the other day I was in the workroom area by myself at my desk and was alone, I thought!

So I let a big bustin fart out and in the reflection behind me I saw my boss approaching.  I just carried on, tra la la.

LOLOLOL a few years back, I decided to buy "scent sprays" to "cover odors".  So, I sprayed my apple spray and my coworker said mmm, I smell apples.  HAHAH I only sprayed it when I farted.  However, my other coworker hates even fresh scents and hated the smell of apples.  She said I'd rather smell the farts!

Then! one day I was in the break room heating a sub and WHAMMMM I let one.  I was alone, until here came the computer technician and she covered her nose and said what's that smell?

I said oh really? these sandwhiches are smelly and she said she's never had a sandwhich smell like that!

UCinGV, oh my god, I did the same thing while working in an office! The circulation was really weird in that building, so the smell would end up at someone else's desk. I would discuss it and help them try to figure out where it was coming from. What's really funny, is that they think they figured it out, and placed blamed on a room below us! Oh dear....
