Flaring after colonoscopy??

Hi,
I haven't been around here in a couple of years almost because I've been feeling good.
Although, over the last 2 or 3 weeks I've started to not. Just going to the bathroom a little more.  Mucous once a week or something.


I had a colonoscopy last Tuesday and since then I've been full on blood and mucous, stomach pain, and

going 8+ times a day. 

Am I in a flare--or can the colonoscopy mess things up for a bit??

I had a cscope last year and I bled with frequent bm's for about a week or so afterwards. Then I went back into remission. The prep of a scope plus the biopsies they take can mess you up for a little bit. But if you were having symptoms before the scope, then I would say that you are in a flare and the scope stirred the "pot" up a bit. Are you on any meds right now?

A scope can definitely stir things up. And the prep to clean you out majorly upsets the balance of your gut ecology. Probiotics will help you restore the good gut flora.

Yes, I'm on 6000mg salafalk a day (12 pills, max dose according to doc). And 6mg entocort.
See, I thought it was the laxative that really upsets everything.

I just don't know if I should wait it out or if I need to call my doctor??

I avoided my C-scope for over a year(very bad me!) because I'd just started to feel better and was afraid it would put me back into a never-ending flare. Fortunately, it didn't bother me afterward. I had a little bleeding and cramping from the biopsies, but it felt completely different than the cramping from a flare.

Should I call the doctor or try and wait it out??
I'm just super stressed now because my mat leave is almost over and I'm going back to work in March.
This is super bad timing. =(

It never hurts to call your GI for reassurance. That is what they are there for. I don't think Uc is considerate of timing unfortunately! It's an equal opportunity disease :(

If it's been over a week and you haven't bounced back, I'd agree you need to talk to your doc.

about 4 yrs ago I had a routine c-scope in new clinic where my longtime gastro had moved. It turned out to be a very unpleasant experience because the phlebotomist & transporter were rough & definitely not doing their jobs with consideration for either the doctors or patients. A few days afterward my UC flared! So-- it's not just the prep & the scope that can rile your body because other associated irritants can cause you physical problems + stress. I have even read that residue from the chemicals used to clean scopes bothers some patients. Hopefully the meds will help you to get symptoms back under control soon. Good luck planning for your return to work, too. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Thanks guys, I called my doc. I probably would of just avoided calling (don't like his secretary). Anyway, my entocort is increased now from 6mg to 27mg. 3 pills x 3 times a day. Hopefully it helps!!

Let us know how it goes. Are you taking probiotics?
