Thanks, Red and Tab!
Having a c-section is an interesting experience. You only get a spinal, so while you are numb from the waist down, you are completely awake - not even in a twilight state. While it is great to be awake because you get to enjoy your baby after birth, it is strange to hear your OB giving surgical orders while operating on you. My husband was allowed to be present, and he sat up by my head... and the anesthesiologist is up there, too. So, it's the three of you enjoying the procedure.
You do feel a lot of tugging and pulling, but no pain at all.
The recovery has been good. I didn't get out of bed for the first 24 hours, but they removed the catheter after that, and I was allowed to move around. It was quite painful for the first week. I took Percocet for pain. They also allow you to take Motrin with the Percocet, but I don't take NSAIDS for obvious reasons, so I just got by with the Percocet. After the first week, I just took Tylenol as needed. Now, 19 days later, I am pain free. I would say that it took a full 14 days for the pain to subside.
The downside to the c-section is that you do have restrictions once you go home. For example, no driving for 2 weeks, and I was limited to one set of stairs per day (I live in a two-story home). Also, you can't lift anything heavier than your baby for the first 4 weeks. No vaccuming for 4 weeks, either (not that I am complaining about
that!). So, you really need to make sure you have someone there to help you.
