I am in the middle of a severe flare. I was put on Prednizone 5 days ago...40 mg. So far no side effects except not sleeping well.

Question: When will I start to see some results? I am not having as many bms. before was going 20+ but only blood and mucus. No poo.

Now going about 5-6 times not much blood or mucus but still no poo. It's been 2 weeks 4 days. before that it was 3 weeks with no bm, then I had colonoscopy and was cleaned out. (thankfully) :-)  

Question: should I be pooing by now...In other words should the swelling in my butt be going down by now? I know I have to go but nothing comes out but a few wormy poos. Probably about a cup in the last 2 weeks 4 days. I am miserable, not in pain but just plain miserable.

Question: I am starting a taper down to 30 mg today for 5 days...will I feel side effects from this and if my colon is still swelled will it help to taper down or make things worse.

The only thing I am taking is the asacal 3 2X day

and the Pred.

Hi, Have you been drinking plenty of water. It is important for ppl with Crohn's or colitis to drink pleny fluids. I have not been on pred in a long time. I would call your doctor asap and ask them about your problem.

I did not have that side effect from the prednisone. I would think you should be pooing by now. It is definately worth a call to your doc. I hope you feel better soon.

I drink lots and lots of water...all the time.

I have never had D. mosly constipation. but never this long! He didn't seem to concerned about it when I told him I hadn't gone in 3 weeks!!!

Would an enema be advised...should one do an enema with coltitis? My butt is soooooo sore from wiping I am not even sure I can do one.  sad   Also I don't even know if I can keep the liquid in.

Have you tried fiber? Sometimes that can help move things along a bit. Is there a reason that you're not on rectal meds at the moment?

I was on cortifoam for a week and it wasn't doing anything. Still 15+ times to bathroom again no poo just muscus and blood. The pred has helped with the blood and mucus although I still get some, and the bathroom trips are down but still no poo. I know it is because my colon is so swelled and inflamed...just don't know what to do about it.

Do you think the pred is doing its job? I am tapering down now. I am just not sure when or what results I should be seeing with the pred. I have been on it for a week 40 mg. started 30mg today.

He didn't want me to use the canasa supositories...why I don't know. I think he wanted to see what would work so he would know? I don't really know except he said to try one thing at a time. I was using metumusial but it caused cramps and he told me to use miralax and I have used that with no results, so I stopped. He did say to be careful of watery stools...I would almost take anything now. :-) The stool I do get out is very little and lookes like worms and some pudding. gross I know

i have found that when i'm on 40mg of pred it makes things worse! its not until the tapper is started that my BMS start improving as well as pain. For some reason the 40mg just tears me apart and my body does not handle it as well. But once I'm on 35mg of about a week my BMS improve a great deal! I would let your doc know that you are experinceing problems, and hang in there and see if things improve during a tapper. The tapper i started in Jan. I was told not to tapper if i was still having problems and I called the doc after being on 40mg for 3 weeks and he gave me the go ahead to tapper to 35mg daily instead and things improved within that week. And not i am successfully tappered down to 25mg (its a long slow process) I hope that helps and that you start seeing the results you want!

Thanks, I will call the Dr. when I get home. He has me tapering 10mg every 5 days. this is the first day of my taper. I am leaving town tomorrow morning...11:00 AM and will not be back till Sunday. I will keep bugging him till he calls back. In the meantime...I am going to do the enema tonight.

any other advice is welcome.

if you are still having symptoms and seeing blood it seems to me that that tapper seems rather quick. I don't know what other people are on but mine is a taper of 5mg every 2 weeks! I know that everyone is diffrent but it doesn't seem like that gives your body enough time to ajust to the new dose, and to see how you react to it. maybe other people could give you some more input. But have a nice time out of town!

Well I kinda felt that way too. 5 days then a 10mg taper? I am seeing some not much blood and mucus. My main problem is when will this swelling go down...seems like it should be able to let some poo through.

I am just not sure how fast pred works. I know the bathroom trips with mucus and blood are down now. So that is an improvement. but...
