Do you know what part of you colon is involved in your UC? Rectal meds will help with proctosigmoiditis, but nothing much higher than that. I'm sure others will have ideas for you, but all I can say is "take the meds." In addition to helping control the bleeding, D. and pain of a flare (which it sounds as if you are headed for), they help protect from colon cancer.

If you take your sulfasalize now, perhaps you can avoid having to go on Pred.

sounds as though it could be gas.....especially since you're flaring.

You have a choice to either use meds or not....seems to be unnecessary suffering if you choose not to.

Regarding your question about ascending being worse...if UC is into the ascending colon, that would mean the whole colon is involved...called ulcerative pancolitis.

I don't think you can compare, for some with limited have more difficulty in controlling symptoms than some who have pancolitis.

One thing you might not know is that UC can spread....and some who haven't been compliant with taking meds have had that happen...much to their shock.

Well, I can say it doesn't hold true for everyone, but not everyone which it's happened was compliant with their meds. As well...symptoms don't always match what's going on in our bodies. Some UCers with pancolitis have less symptoms than others who have UP. Some UCers with obvious inflammation visually (as seen with a c-scope or s-scope) claim they feel great. Others with visual low inflammation have more extreme symptoms than what the expections of it would be.

One med that won't prevent the spread (from MY perspective) is prednisone.
