Prdenisolone Side Effects - Dosage Related?

Hi Folks,

Just a quickie.....

In a flare - again! Seems like as business as usual lately.....

Are side effects to Pred dose related?

For example, struggling to get lower than 10/5mg - if I was to remain on this dosage for a while longer, would to moonace and other nasty effects start to dissappear as it's such a low dose, or do you need to get off the drug completely?

Also, is there such a thing as a Prednisolone Enema, and has anyone had any experience with it?

I'm not too sure about that. I think if you were on a low dose for a long period of time that you would have some minor side effects.

I've had Cortenema, which are prednisone. There weren't too many side effects for me. Acne and fatigue. They made my bum happy though!

I had my worst issues once I got below 20mg. From experience, it seems that each time you are on pred, you need to be on longer or at a higher dose. But, that could be my steroid dependency talking.

It took a few weeks AFTER I was off of the pred for my side effects to START to disappear. However, my last pred stint was about nine months long :(

There are steroid enemas. You may still have side effects, but since your body is actually absorbing less of the drug, it takes longer for them to develop and they may not be as severe.

hey there.  I also post at a Kidney board and I wanted to know if being on a low dose 5mg for a year after being on 60mg a day for 7 months would I lose the moon face etc.  A response that I got was for that person it took a couple of months being on the low dose and their moonface etc. started to go away.  Everyone is different, I hope for both of us that will be the case.

From my observations, steroid side effects seem to vary from person to person. Some will get them on lower dosages, others of us never get the moon face. I think it's hard for anyone to propose a timetable for that reason. I do know the longer you're on them the more slowly you have to taper and the more time it takes for the temporary side effects to go away.

Hmm...keep in mind that though similar prednisone and prednisolone are different drugs and have somewhat different side effect and dosage profiles. Prednisolone is an immediate acting corticosteroid-in my experience the side effects are dosage dependent and as you come down in dose some of the side effects will go away.

If you had a big moonface while on >20mg Pred then being at 5mg - yes, it would start to disappear. But, VERY slowly.  Once you have been on such a low dose for around 2/3 months, it will be mostly gone, but you still wont have your old face back exactly as it was.  But, it will be very minor.

BTW, when you are tapering from 5mg, I would suggest going down in 1/2 mg increments every 2/3 weeks. Sounds silly, but it makes a huge difference. I have been on pred for many years now and have learnt the hard way. Im down to 3mg.
