Kidney stones anyone?

I cranked out a kidney stone the other day about 1/16" or so in diameter...  I had massive pain in my side for about 30 minutes then it subsided.  I went to work and peed into a paint strainer...plop out came a stone.  Any other UC people get kidney stones?  This is my 4th.  The 3rd had to be blasted out.  1 and 2 passed.  It has been about 10 years since #3.  Think it could be dehydration or related to any UC meds like Asacol?

I seem to get a pretty big one every 2 years or so. Seems that people with UC are at greater risk because they don't expel the calcium out of their poop, and it is reabsorbed into the blood stream and deposited in your kidneys. The first one was torture. After 2 days in the hospital, had to have the old basket retreival surgery.....horrible. Stent put in and then after 10 days the stent was removed.....that was worse than the whole kidney stone. The second one was 9mmx5mm, and I had that one lithotripsied. I am now on 25 mg HCTZ (diuretic) that will, we hope, remove all the calcium out of my body. We won't know if it works for a year or so. I am actually going back to the urologist today. Will let you know if he changes course.

redbull...never had shingles, I hope I never do. They can happen if you've had chicken pox way back when and if you've been exposed to chicken pox, had an extreme series of x-rays, been on immunosuppressants, been very ill with a very low immune system..etc.  I know of one woman who gets them often..yikes!  Hope you don't get them again.

The outcome of my urology visit is Renal tubular acidosis.....either cause by my UC meds or the UC itself causing malabsorbtion of calcium. I am on HCTZ (diuretic to fluch out the calcium) and a citric acid/potassium pill as well to replace the potassium that will get flushed out with the diuretic and the citric acid to prevent more stones from forming. He thinks with this course of action I will not have any more problems. Knowing how horribly painful stones are, I would recommend you get a great urologist, have a 24 hour urine done, and all the blood work. This may be your issue as well. I have been on Asacal (12 a day) for 10 years before switching to colazal (9/day) now. I know that has something to do with it. But I need the colazal. Do you ever feel like your body is betraying you one organ at a time???
