Tapering Prednisone

My GI started me back on prednisone on 3/6/08 at 60 mg due to a bad flareup. It took a while to kick in. My first good day was 3/24/08, without cramping, less diarrhea and very little blood. Before this I was going 15-20 times a day with lots of pain, blood and mucous. For the past 6 days I go 4-7 times with only sometimes that I see blood. I was also started on 6-MP on 3/17/08, which I know takes a while to start working.  I hate being on prednisone again. At this stage is it too soon to start tapering down the prednisone? I am hoping to stay on prednisone for a short course, but I don't want to set things back by tapering too soon.

I think most sources say 6-MP takes at least six weeks to take effect. Given that, I'd wait at least 6 weeks, then taper very slowly.

My doc told me last week that 6MP takes 3-4 months to start working!

When I was on 6-mp, my consultant said the medication would take 12 weeks to work, I was also on a high dosage of prednisone. He said I would not be able to reduce my steriod intake until after being on the 6mp for 12 weeks. However I did not manage to stay on the 6-mp due to abnornal blood tests. Hope this helps a bit.
