Pred not working?

My daughter has been on pred, 20 mg x2 daily to control a flare up for 4 weeks, (bleeding), no pains or other symtoms, 2-3 b/m's a day, blood on tissue and in bowl. stools semi-firm, not watery at all.

seems the pred has not stopped the bleeding?, any suggestions would be appreciated

She also just swtitched from Asacol to Liadal this past week, blood still present confused

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm a firm believer that Prednisone does more harm than good. I responsded better to steroid enemas. I would suggest that to your daughter if she is able to do them. There are basically no side effects because it does not get into the blood stream. 40mg is a lot to take for an extended period of time. I was on that amount for 2 months and it did not seem to help much.

Is there a lot of blood or just a little? Is the blood bright red or darker? Does she have the urgency that's associated w/ a flare? I'm wondering if the UC could be doing better, but perhaps she has hemmorhoids that are causing the bleeding. (they can be internal, so aren't always visible to the eye). Just a thought. If she isn't having any other UC symptoms this would be my guess, but I'm no doctor!

Thanks for the response, the blood is a bright red and is always at the tail end of the stool, she does not have any urgency associated with her b/m's, she is 9 yrs old, goes to school, swimming lessons, bike riding etc, never has an emrgency, we have scheduled an appointment for a 2nd opinion later this month

20MG might not be high enough, my doctor starts me and 40 or 60 than tapers down

Any thoughts to trying cortenemas or rowasa? I know it's not appealing at all, but if they work, they work wonders.................

Hi Tinks Dad,

I started Pred on 09/07 and actually got worse and flared on 09/21 (I had stopped Asacol cold turkey on 09/07) and what really helped me get my flare under control were hydrocortisone enemas. If she can take rowasa I would try those first.

Pred took a long time to help me and I was at 60mg a day.

I highly recommend asking GI about rectal meds!!!!

Unfortunately, oral pred doesn't always work like we'd like it to. Have you mentioned the continuing symptoms to her doctor?
