Sometimes when I smell something, it triggers me into an urgency. Last night, I was at my son's soccer game & someone walked by with popcorn. I had to run to the bathroom immediately. My urgencies can be trigger by different smells. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

I have that issue with the smell of coffee sometimes.

I suppose its mental.

Most definitely! When I had UC it was the smell of new books in a bookstore. I could only visit bookstores that had bathrooms. Now being colonless this no longer happens but the memory is still there.

Mine is not just one smell. I don't have certain smell that activates it. it's just sometimes I can smell something & have to run to the bathroom.

I don't think what you're experiencing is that unusual. The smells probably set off peristalsis in your digestive tract, giving you urgency when the contractions affect your rectum. A couple days ago I was discussing eye sensitivity with my ophthalmologist, who commented: "Some people are extra-sensitive to many things, but others aren't bothered by ANYTHING, my dad, for example." / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)


Let me just add that this doctor went on to say that changes in blood pressure, blood sugar levels, & hormone levels can lead to sensitivity reactions, the result of physiological stress.
