I went out and bought Digestive Advantage for crohn's today, at Rite Aid. Am currently in a flare for 6 weeks, hoping and praying that this will help. Have also been taking VSL3 for about a week, but it's not really doing much...I'm not really sure how much of it to take, how much is too much, or perhaps not enough...?

I started with one pill yesterday. The package says to take one a day and if after 14 days the desired effects have not happend bump it up to 2 pills a day.

My GI said that I could take 2 pills/day since I'm in a flare right now. And once it dies down, I can cut it down to 1 pill/day.

I've seen 2 studies so far that tried using VSL#3 to treat UC. The first used 4 packets (1800 billion bacteria) per day, and the other used twice that; they both had pretty good remission rates, so 4/day is probably enough. If I recall correctly, the insert that comes with it says to use 4 packets if you're going to the washroom a fair bit.

I, too bought some of this product after hearing about it on this site. I got it on Amazon, I don't know if it was a great deal, but I live in a small town where you can't find anything! I'll try anything so I can cancel my appt to start Remicade on May 6th. I'm starting with one pill since I take a strong probiotic from my ND. I also started on a nicotine patch. Has anyone else tried this? I take Pred 15mg/day (on a taper), as well as Imuran 150mg, Asacol 400mg 4Xday. I've had this flare with blood and inflammation for months, no diarrhea except when I had C defficile. My GI Dr says it's just a matter of time before the Pred will keep me functioning and I'll need Remicade. He and the specialist he referred me to say that they haven't seen any side effects with Remicade, short or long term. I know it's a little off subject, but does anyone have any input/comments?

I'm very surprised about the nicotine patch. My GI told me that nicotine has been shown to help symptoms of Chron's but make UC symptoms worse. I'm sure you've done your research but that's what I was told. If I were you I'd try remicade if it will keep you off the dreaded pred. Hopefully the DA will help you and you won't need to get to that point.

Actually, I believe it's the opposite... Nicotine helps UC but hurts Crohns. Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, but that's what I seem to remember reading.

Yes, i have both read and been told that nicotine hurts crohns and helps uc.

I've joined the Digestive Advantage band-wagon and got started on it yesterday.  Will keep the forum posted on any effects but it's been good to read everyone's feedback on this.

I'm not overly impressed with the Digestive Advantage. I'm currently taking 2 of the Chrones and Colitis pills a day. While things have been different. However I'm not sure if it is a good different or a bad different. I have had more BMs' per day. The difference here is that they have been in the afternoon and evening as well as in the morning. They are still somtimes bloody and the consistancy of the BM is different than before. The consistancy thing might be a good thing. I've had two cases of diareaha but the good news with that is, is that it is like the D that is used to get before having all these UC issues. Maybe a little blood/mucas in there but it feels like and looks like a normal persons D.

My mornings are still a bit rough, and it makes me wonder if I should split my two pills up. Take one in the morning and one in the evening before going to bed.

I will definatly keep using it untill I'm done with the box but I am unsure if I will buy more. I have a GI appointment wednesday and I'll talk to him about it. I'm sure that he'll have nothing good to say about probiotics... just the vibe that I get from previous discussions about meds.

This is what this stuff is doing to me since being on it, lol. I can't help but crack up when that commercial for gas-x is on.

but D_A and Bigphule did you notice any benefit from using it so far (like a week or 10 days etc)?? how long to wait to see any changes

guys, dont forget , when taking probiotics you need to try to avoid putting lots of fermentable carbs into you body (breads, sugar etc..) this can make symptoms worse. trust me, i speak from experience.

Newucpat, I've not noticed any real benefit from using Digestive Advantage. And I was wrong my GI appointment was today. Glad I had my phone set to remind me hehehe...

Anyhow, the GI said that probiotics were great, but not for someone in the middle of an acute flare. Sometimes the "hormones" that come with probiotics can cause D. I can understand that as I've experianced it twice. So he asked me to stop taking it, so I will.

So I'm on 15mg of pred for the next month untill I get in for my next scope. They will see whats going on and then I might end up on 6MPs since I have a bad reaction to 5ASAs.

I've been taking this a week and a half and have noticed no change. However, I haven't had any side effects either. As I stated earlier, my GI said it'll take a while to notice a change when using a probiotic, but I'm not sure exactly how long.

thanks for the replies. i was thinking to try them out for my husband but he is just seing some progress with his flare and he was just diagnosed with UC in march i would not risk it trying something new. you guys are right when he will be steady may be in a couple of months we will give probiotics a shot and see how will they go

IT WORKS GREAT FOR ME!

I have had UC over 28 yrs. ALMOST had my intetsines removes at one point. Constant struggle and lifestyle DRAG!

I tried digestive advantadge.

I get a colonoscopy every year. FIRST time in 28 years I have gotten such a good report. Had the colonoscopy about 1 week ago. Doc said, wow you look really good. He called me today and sez he took 7 biopsies, five came back showing remission, and 2 with just slight change, he asked me if I have been doing anything different, that this is the best he has ever seen me. I actually forgot 'till after he hung up that I had been taking these (not very regular) for about 2 months. BM's are actually starting to look like a normal human being, and after decades of not knowing what that was like... I actually wanted to run out and call people in to show them...like a little kid...look what I did! I would not hesitate to reccomend this. Nothing to lose here but some bucks, and not that much at that. The only real way this can add up to any money is if you like it and find it works, you will be buying it forever, but well worth it!!

johnj, Is digestive advantage the first pro-biotic you have tried? Or have you tried other brands in the past without the same amazing results. Congratulations on the solid deuces!

Interesting! I've never noticed this product before but I suppose it's worth a try. Not having insurance or a doctor currently, I'm looking for any OTC treatments that can keep this flare from getting worse!

Yup, Solgar and several others, but none of the others times was I also taking Prevacid. I doubt that has anything to do with it though.

I have been taking DA for 2 weeks now. I noticed that my Stool is more formed. I am having about 1 deposit a day but it has switched from morning to afternoon. I take it in the morning. I have also noticed that it is more painful for me to have BMs but I think that is due to it being more firm than loose.
