new boss, should I wait until a flare or not to say anything?

so I have a new boss, I've been at this co. for 8 years and 2 years ago the boss I had for 6 years got laid off, then I had an interim boss for a year, then another boss and now going forward I will have a new boss (I work for multiple biz groups in my co.)

I know I have given advice, but now that it is happening to me..........I mean I might not flare again while at this co.  but I also have my kidney disease.  My new boss will pretty much be hands off and is not in the office much.

I think I will ask my old boss what she thinks (she has been wonderful) and talk to a couple other people that report to him to see what they have said.  He is a type 1 diabetic, so he does know what a chronic illness is like, but he is also a workaholic.

I mean I do have to go to Dr's appts for the next year every month so that will come up so I'd rather just lay it out and say I have MCD & UC and currently have Dr's appt's once a month for the next year and I will let you know "if" I become sick.

Is it possible to make up the time or dial in from home from time to time? My old boss's daughter has crohns so he was really understanding. I got a new boss in January. I haven't uttered a peep to him about my UC. I just make up the time in increments here and there so it doesn't look like I am loafing or taking advantage of anything (or anyone). He's set to retire in May and who knows who my new boss will be. I'll play it by ear and see how it works out.

If it was me... I probably wouldn't say anything until I really had to. I just wouldn't want it to seem like I was a chronic complainer or anything.. or like I was going to be expecting to take a lot of time off. I don't really know tho... let us know what you decide.

I talked to some people here and have decided to just say I have a couple of health issues and have dr's appts monthly for the next year and how does he want me to communicate time off for that and for vacations etc. I'm salary so I just end up staying late and it all works out.

I would rather just have a conversation up front especially since I will be coming in late 1xmonth. If I go into a flare then I can explain more.

I say that if HR knows whats going on then you don't HAVE to tell your boss, but I would.  Just tell him/her that you have a chornic illness called UC, that everything is okay right now, but that could change at a moments notice.

sounds like you have a good strategy, Beth75! You're upfront about having a chronic illness that requires medical attention, without going into TMI territory. That's how I'm doing it at my job right now. All I had to say was "its medical," and that was it. If I get asked to go into more detail or if my flare gets worse, I'd probably go to my supervisor instead of my HR dept. (my HR dept is a bunch of incompetent gossips, but my boss is very cool -- he only cares that the work is getting done, not how many times he sees me walk out to the ladies room).
