Flagyl and risks?

Hi everybody.

I have been feeling lousy lately, nausea, D, bleeding, dizziness, etc.... I have refills on my Flagyl.  Flagyl usually helps me quite a bit when I have these kinds of problems.  So, my question is are there risks in taking Flagyl frequently?  I am not sure, but could it lead to nerve damage or other problems?  Thank you.

Seems pretty safe.

Well it's an antibiotic so it's gonna kill of good bacteria as well which in turn leaves your system vulnerable so be sure to take a good probiotic daily and indefinitely regardless of being on antiobiotics...and while on antis take the probiotics at least 2 hours after you're done taking your antis for the day.

Hi - I was on flagyl and it really messed me up. I don't know what it was with that medicine but about an hour after taking it I felt almost suicidal. I knew I just had to wait it out but I refuse to go back on that particular medicine because it was worse than the cure. Good luck

I have been on flagyl several times over the years. The last time was last summer and it slayed me - numbness, depression, disturbed sleep, urinary backup, and now, 9 months later, I still have the diarrhea that the flagyl caused. Apparently some people react well to it, others are hit with harsh side effects. I say look into the falgyl effects and make an informed choice.

Flagyl isn't really recommended for treating UC. The antibiotic properties will slow down the diarrhea but it doesn't correct it unless the diarrhea is caused by a bacteria. Rather then continuing to treat yourself with Flagyl you should talk with your GI about your symptoms and see if there is an alternative.

I agree with Sue- self-medicating with anti-biotics is not a good idea. The symptoms you describe- they sound like UC symptoms with the exception of the dizziness- it's most likely a reaction to the Humira, don't you think? I would call your GI asap. I personally HATE Flagyl- it's gotta be my least fave of all the anti-biotics.

I've had GI's prescribe flagyl to me for my crohns but I never noted any improvements what so ever any time I've ever been on it.

Flagyl is icky! It made me feel very spacey and disconnected. Not to mention the smell when it left my body - or the taste.

Better to call your doc and discuss.

Boy, I'm with a lot of these others who seriously hate Flagyl. I had to take it a couple times, but only for specific bacterial infections, never for UC. I do not like the side effects of it at all, made me jittery/jumpy and bad taste in my mouth. Both times I took it, I couldn't wait for the course to be over. I would definitely talk it over with your doctor. There are definitely also dangers with repeated use of antibiotics, like the development of drug-resistant bacteria strains.
