The pills wouldn't be just releasing right in your rectum (right above where your butt meets the chair). They would start higher up in your colon. I've never felt this or heard of anyone feeling medication being released in their body. Very interesting.

Update: So yesterday the "fizzy" feeling seemed to lessen. I felt it much less often than the first two days, where it was almost constant all day. I guess it might just be my body getting used to taking medicine after 27 years without anything.

I also only had three BMs yesterday, which thrilled me so much! But this morning I've had three already and so I doubt I'll reach the same low-record today.

So far no other side effects. My face did break out in a few pimples, which is very rare for me, but I've also been stressed and worrying since the diagnosis so I'm not sure if the break out is related to stress or the medicine.

I definitely need some iron, I'm starting to get my low-iron black outs. I'm going to try to eat iron-enriched foods this evening and see if it helps.

The biggest problem I'm having is an unsupportive boyfriend. I specifically bought some canned fruit (thanks to suggestions in this thread!) to have last night and he ate it before I could! That really irked me. And he's been doing other unsupportive things, like getting annoyed when I talk about the colitis and my treatment. He's normally a really great guy, I realize he comes off like a jerk here, but right now, I'm seriously annoyed with him. I wish I could get him to understand the disease, but he seems uninterested in reading up on it. Sorry, needed to vent!

Hey .. its ok to vent here !! When I was first diagnosed in '04 I was living with my bf at the time. He was very unsupportive. I was really sick and laying on the couch one day. He wanted to have some of his friends over so he told me I would have to go to bed so they could have the couch!! IMAGINE!! Needless to say... I am not with him anymore. Not for that reason inparticular but it sure added to the other reasons!! Now I am with an amazing person.. I told him right from the start about my illness.. mostly because I felt the need to explain my skinniness and tiredness... as I was just coming out of a flare when I met him. He seemed to understand.. it was easier to because I didnt realize he was even interested in me at the time so I was talking to him like a friend.. not a potential bf. He has been more than supportive thru this flare.. he brings me tea and ice cream, etc when I can't get out of bed to go out.. he calls me all the time.. he always wants to know what the Doctors say.. he's beyond what I would have even imagined. :) I feel very lucky.

I hope you feel better soon and maybe you should try telling your bf how you feel and that you don't think hes being very supportive. Or.. ignore it until you feel better and then mention it to him. Sometimes they just don't realize. MEN !!! LOL

Hi Kasey,
It sounds like you are doing a little better. I have never heard of acne being a side effect of the sulfasalazine. I know it is definitely a side effect of prednisone, but luckily, you're not on that, right? It probably is from the stress.

As for your boyfriend, perhaps you have to hide the canned fruit? Hopefully he will come to realize just what you are dealing with and be more sympathetic and understanding. You can vent on this forum as much as you need to, we all know what you're dealing with as far as the UC goes.

I hope you are having less trouble swallowing the pills, believe it or not, it does get easier.

Jenn, your new boyfriend sounds amazing! I'm glad you found someone so supportive.

Yeah, I'm not surprised if the acne is stress related. I've been worrying about this whole thing a lot.

The pills are still the same to swallow, but I'm less afraid of them now, so I'm getting used to them. However, I still experience a bit of anxiety every time I have to take one. I have to psych myself up for it, take big deep breaths, etc. Still, they go down every time after they hit a road block at the back of my throat that extra water helps them pass through.

As for hiding food from my boyfriend, I actually do this often! The boy has no will power, and I do (meaning, I can buy a bag of chips and eat it over the course of two weeks. He eats the entire bag in an hour.) My apartment is small, it's much easier to hide chocolate bars than canned food, but I'll figure something out. (Going food shopping today was also a nightmare, he critiqued everything I put in the cart. I cried because he stressed me out so much. We talked about it briefly. Hopefully things will be better now.)

I'm definitely having less BMs each day so it seems the pills have been working. Yesterday, I only had three in the morning, none at night, which totally excited me! They are still loose, but at least I'm not going more times than I can count on two hands.

Last night I did have a massive headache which kept me bed ridden for most of the evening. Still, this may be related to low-iron as I'm getting the short black outs I normally get and those are usually followed by headaches. No headache today so far.
