Those Who Went From Asacol To Lialda

I recently switched from Asacol to Lialda about a week or so ago and was doing great on the Asacol and Rowasa's but since substituting the Lialda for the Asacol I've had a swipe of small blood on stool for a day or so, my stool has softened up a bit and I have some on and off stomach pain (I still use the Rowasa). I know both drugs have the same medicine but Lialda has a timed release delivery agent. I am curious if anyone else here that has switched had the same initial response and did things finally normalize or did you have to go back to the Asacol?

Hi...don't have the experience, but I would assume there would be some sort of adjustment.

What were your symptoms that led you to change to Lialda? or was it to just use a med once a day?

How often and how many Asacol were you taking?

How many Lialda are you on?

I hope your adjustment period is short.

Hi Q

I was on 8 (3.2 g) Asacol per day and am on 3 Lialda (3.6g)...I switched to go once a day which has been great but so far it's not working as well as the asacol which is wierd because its active ingredient is the same as Asacol.

You're on the Rowasa nightly? for how long up till now?

Rowsas every third night until now...and now every other night since the lialda...

I'd suggest every night for at least a week...then if all is OK, go back to every second night.

The switch may have something to do with it...or you weren't ready to go to every third night.

I've done lots of back to square one over the years.

I was doing great prior to the Lialda switch...we'll see if all gets back in the groove

Hi, I switched to Lialda and it has been great! I was using Asacol and switched. It did take a while for it to kick in. Try and hang in I think you will like the results.

Thanks...glad to hear it took awile to kick in as I was getting worried...how long did it take for you?

I'm thinking about switching to Lialda. If I'm not having any adverse reactions to Asacol, should I just stick with it until it stops working?

It's the exact same medicine as Asacol just a different (timed release) delivery system which is great because you only take the med once a day. I was taking 8 asacol per day and now only 3 Lialda but I noticed a slight set back when I switched, which seems to be getting better now (it's been about 1.5 weeks+/- since I went to Lialda).

I am very curious to hear back from AUNTMOO to see exactly how log it took her body to adjust.

Asacol works great for me. I switched to Lialda, because they have a patient assistance program, and it did absolutely nothing. I even tried an ultra-high dose of 9.6 grams per day. And nothing. My symptoms came right back. Now, I'm going back to Asacol. I guess Lialda delivers the drug to a part of the intestines where I don't need it. I have colitis near the rectum.

I find that the none of the oral 5-ASAs worked for me. Colozal stopped working, Asacol made my flare a lot worse, and Lialda made my tummy bloat.

On the other hand, suppositories did help.

Was on 4800mg Asacol for a number of months, and don't think it did anything for me at all (stopped it cold turkey for 2 days, on 2 occasions, to see, although doc said it would take at least 3 days). Switched one day to 4 Lialdas (4800mg as well), and didn't notice any difference. Well, not true, Asacol made the hair fall out of parts of my legs and arms, and it came back in with the Lialda :)

I tried Lialda while I was in a bad flare. My GI said it may help more than Asacol. Unfortunately, neither seemed to help get me out of the flare and I ended up going on prednisone. I switched back to Asacol while I was on pred and never got to see if Lialda was equally or more effective. Now I am in remission and feeling great. I am tempted to try the Lialda that I have in the med cabinet but I am nervous to rock the boat. I think I will stick with Asacol for now. I'd really love to drop the oral 5ASAs completely but that would definitely be playing with fire. I am not convinced they are doing anything for me as I flared while on them and they didn't help bring me to remission.

I switched from Asacol to Lialda and found no difference except that it's great to take 3 Lialda once a day instead of 3 Asacol 3 times a day.
