Took Pred for Poison Ivy - Made my UP WORSE??!!!

Hi All,

I had to take a short round of Pred to get a case of poison ivy under control.  It increased my UP symptoms!!!  More blood, etc.  I was already flaring, so this didn't help at all.  I tried pred before, and it didn't help.  So, I wasn't expecting things to get worse.  I was hopeful that it might do some good.

Has the pred made any of you worse?

This makes me really nervous because I have tried all 5ASA's (oral and otherwise) out there.  I am currently on Lialda (3 a day) and one Canasa at night.  This combo helped totally for about two months, and since then I have been going back downhill.  I have posted my concerns about this before, and I am sorry to sound like a broken record.  But, I think the only option I have left is the immunosuppresive drugs.

See a new GI next week - hope he is the one who knows what he is doing and can help me get this under control for longer than two months.  I mean, I don't think I am asking too much to have a remission that lasts longer than two months!!!!!!!

On the flip side, I know that I am soooooo lucky compared to a lot of you.  I only have an actual BM 1 to 2 times a day.  On some days, I do have some urgency and then all that happens is mucus/blood.  Oh well, enough details for now!

Beth, nono   never compare yourself and your suffering to that of others.  What you are going thru is just as horrible as the rest of us.

I've never heard of pred making poison ivy or any rash worse.  But here's a theory - what if the poison ivy brought about the inflammation response in your body?  Poison Ivy and it's rashes is your bodys immune response.  Your body says hey, there is something here that doesn't belong so then goes on the warpath.  And of course we have an already overactive immune system as it is so it works overtime and makes you flare.  I know that seasonal allergies can bring on a flare so why not a poison ivy rash?

I think she is saying that the prednisone made her UC worse, not the rash.  I do agree that the poison ivy may have sparked up your UC though.  I don't know about the pred making UC symptoms worse, it is a wonder drug for me, but I suppose it is possible.  It may be time for a trip to the GI.  I sure hope you feel better soon.

It took about 2 months for prednisone to help my UC, I got better before I got worse........though I had to stop Asacol cold turkey. Just wanted to say it can take a while, hope you feel better soon.
