PLS HELP - DOES THIS SOUND LIKE ULCERATIVE COLITIS?

Hi there,  hoping someone posts a reply to my question....

I am a 34 yo female who has had lower left abdominal/pelvic pain/discomfort for 8+ months now - if I press in that region is tender and sore to the touch.  Sometimes it is even sore just to stand at the counter - sometimes it goes away for a while - sometimes it gets worse and is painful throughout the day and can result in diarrhea. 

I have also developed in the last monthy only - very sore joints in the ankles/knees/elbows.  Terrible in the mornings.  I also have been getting red itchy dots on my arms/hands.  I have had a sore neck for over 2 months now and have bouts of dizziness that can last weeks at a time. I cannot figure out what this is, and my doc does't seem to know either. Had a normal pelvic ultrasound - so perhaps it's not gynelogical.  The funny thing is it all started right after giving birth to my first baby.

I am awaiting a CT scan, but the waitlist is 6 months.

Does this sound familar to anyone?

Hi Neutrogal,

There are some symptoms that sound like UC but many others that do not.

Here is a link to a article that provides solid information on the symptoms that present with Ulcerative Colitis that I suggest you read.

Do NOT go stressing and jumping to conclusions, there are also plenty of things that could cause some of these symptoms. Personally, I would suggest getting your doctor to arrange a full blood count as well as a CRP, vitamin and mineral essay, liver function and kidney function test in the mean time to rule out some slightly more common possibilities.

Full blood count will tell your doc if your white and red cell count is ok. CRP will give you your current inflammation index, if its very high then you could consider IBD to be a possibility. Vitamin and mineral essay is good as it will help determine if you are overdosing in, or lacking in something critical to healthy body function. Liver and kidney essay will tell you if your blood cleaning organs are working properly.

If you really want to find out sooner then 6 months if it is either UC or Chron's, you could opt to have an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy done.

I have all those symptoms you do.  I try not to push on my left side anymore, I used to wonder if I did if it would hurt, it does so I just leave it alone.  If I were you I would see a Gastroenterologist and get a colonoscopy asap.  I have all those symptoms but also a lotof rectal bleeding, up to 30 bms a day, bloody diarrhea or mucus to go along with all the things you stated.

So, this is off and on pain. When you had your pelvic ultrasound were you having symptoms? I agree with princess colon, go the the gi and get his opinion. Are you having urgency, mucous or blood in your stools? You should also consider getting a blood test to measure your hormone levels. Pain in the left side could be an ovarian cyst.......when it bursts the pain would subside. Not sure about the joint pain and the red bumps though. What about fibromyalgia? I would insist on the tests and start ruling things out. Best of luck and I hope you feel better.

I'm sorry you're having so much difficulty. I'd like to point out that you need to be careful about self-diagnosing. There is a lot of information available on the internet now, some of it accurate and some not. Also, when we're sick and don't know what's wrong, it's easy to try to fit our symptoms into the descriptions we see. Sometimes the more things you read about, the more anxious you get.

Some of the symptoms you list may be found in some people with UC, but most are not characteristic of the condition. I wish you luck in getting a diagnosis and successful treatment.

I agree, go to a GI to get a colonoscopy. Good luck. It does sound to me like symptoms my daughter had and the doc thought it was ovarian cyst. Take CAre, Bellski

Some of the literature my doctor gave me this past week was from the www.uptodate.com website.  Then you can click on the patients tab and search.  The link is below.  An extensive wait for a CT scan or colonoscopy shouldn't be tolerated when someone is having problems.   A doctor that listens and takes action is irreplacable and priceless.  Good Luck.
