Hello everyone, I have a couple of quick question...I will be having shoulder surgery in a couple of weeks...I know I will be giving pain medication to use at home afterwards and was wondering if there are any certain ones I should avoid because of UC? Also, I am in a mild flare right now and was wondering if the surgery will make it more than a mild flare? To be honest, I was just thinking that if I had any stress or worry over having surgery that it may worsen, but as far as the surgery itself it shouldn't......should it??? Thanks in advanced for any help :)

Rule of thumb - no NSAIDs - acetominophine based meds only.

Only can give you my experience.  I was to have knee replacement surgery a mont ago.  My UC flared up three days before with bloody diarrhea.  I know I would have to take blood thinners after surgery so I called and told surgeon.

He will not do the surgery until I can get into remission with NO bleeding.  Makes sense because of my risk for blood clots.  Probably depends on type of surgery you are having too.

I believe the stress was the reason the flareup was worse and bleeding started.  Hoping I can get it under control soon.  I feel the gastro doctor and orthopedic surgeon will have to agree before I can have the surgery safely. I am taking Xanax to calm my anxiety.  Other information is below.

Me, too, BK. I'm waiting to have kidney surgery and they won't touch me until I go into remission, which is extremely frustrating because there is strong evidence that the mass in my kidney is cancerous.

Are you taking prednisone? That's also part of my problem. The surgeon will not operate if I'm on any kind of steroids. I'm in a catch 22 that could cost me my life and all I keep hearing is to keep my stress level down. Yeah, right!!!

As far as pain relief, any kind of opiate would probably be fine.

Usually when I am flaring and have to have surgery, the stress of the surgery as well as the anesthesia and pain medications makes my flare a bit worse because it constipates me; it has sort of a "rebound" reaction for me. If you can do rectal meds, maybe ask your doctor for some until your body readjusted? As for the pain meds, definately no anti-inflammatories if you can help it. That can definately make a mild flare more then what it is by causing intestinal bleeding. Good luck - when is your surgery?

I am sure they will give you a narcotic like vicodin. When I take it for arthritis pain it can actually slow the colon down enough to feel "normal". Long term use can lead to addiction and other issues, but post surgery I don't know how you would get on top of the pain without something narcotic. My $.02 for what its worth. Good luck.

I've had shoulder surgery twice in the past three years, once arthroscopic and the second time open. For the arthroscopic my doc gave me Lortab (same as Vicodin) and after the open she started with Percocet and then Lortab. I tapered from those to Tylenol.

My doc also had the anesthesiologist do a nerve block, which kept the shoulder numb for about 48 hours. Coupled with the cold pack she sent me home in, I really didn't need a lot of pain medication. I took it mostly at night, when everything always hurts more. You might ask your doc about the nerve block thing, it was great.
