5-ASA's and vaginal bleeding

I was wondering if anyone taking any 5-ASA's suffer from bleeding?  I am on 3 lialda a day and find that I am bleeding vaginally for no reason.  I have taken myself off the medication for a month to see if there was another cause or if it was indeed the lialda.  When I put myself back on (the pain was unbearable) the bleeding started again.  Any thoughts or any women having the same problem?  Any feed back would be helpful! Thanks

I am on Lialda too. I was on 4 pills, but now I am on 2 a day. I noticed that since I started taking the Lialda, I will spot some in between periods. I have never done that before. I don't know if there is a link between the two or not. You should probably let your OB and your GI know if you are actually bleeding though. Hope that helps. Let us know what your Dr. says.

I was just recently diagnosed with UC back in April. At that time I was on cortifoam and asacaol. I started having irregular vaginal bleeding right away but chalked it up to the cortifoam since that is a side effect. I have now been off of the cortifoam for over a month and was switched to 2 Lialda daily and the bleeding has gotten heavier. I went to the GI yesterday and discussed it with her but at that point I hadn't bled in 3 days so she said just to call if I had this problem again but seemed to have no idea why this would be happening. Well, this afternoon I started up again so I guess Monday I will be giving her a call. Have you gotten any answers as to why you are having spotting? confused

I have noticed the same thing. Is it the Lialda? I have no female parts so where's the blood coming from? Anyone else experiencing this?

I haven't seen this yet, but I have only been on Lialda for six weeks. My period has actually been pretty light this time around. Curious to hear what you discover.

I had lots of vaginal pain while on 5-ASAs. We finally figured out I'm very sensitive to them. I know an old midwife remedy to start labor is to give the mother castor oil in the hopes that stimulating intestinal contractions will stimulate the uterus to contract - simply by their proximity in the abdomen. I thought the vaginal pain might be caused because the Lialda caused me to have horrible cramping and diarrhea. In any case, it stopped when I discontinued the medication.

I wish you luck in figuring this out! Dealing with UC, you certainly don't need to have anything extra added to your pain level! :(

i take asamax and i often have spotting always on the 20th day of my menstrual cycle, i was also wondering if it could have been caused by asamax

^^ Spotting is usually caused from hormonal changes/imbalance.

Day 20 might be just after your ovulation if you're on a 30 - 32ish day cycle?

I used to have spotting a lot but haven't since I switched to birth control pills without estrogen. I don't think mine was related to 5ASAs though I don't remember having it before taking them.

I had spotting, but it was from hydrocortisone enemas :(

Sammbeno, Cortifoam is a relatively low-dose (10%) steroid, unlikely to cause vaginal bleeding. Hopefully, pb4 will chime in here to second this-- as she has a long experience using it to treat Crohn's colitis. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
