We have spoken of it here in the past.  I have just yesterday taken a stool diagnosis test and don't have the results yet.  But my doc may think my current bad flare may be related to this bug and being on IV Vancomyacin Antibiotic.  Please any thoughts?

You can go to how is shrek doing for my long current status and question here as to what is the basis of my current really nasty flare.

I have lost my mind it seems being in the hospital/convalescent apartment for 4-5 moths now.  If anyone had any thoughts to help me from a flare with mrsa perspective, or that nasty colon bacteria please refer to my response message and reply here or there.

You are not talking about E-Coli are you? I have read that the E-Coli is present in many people's colons and can be responsible for urinary tract infections.

clostridium difficile colitis

commonly called c-diff.  Caused by antibiotic use.  My stool was tested because I had just gotten off a long regimen of Amoxicillin.

clostridium difficile is the one most commonly looked for and is often treated with vancomyacin.  It's becoming a more widespread problem, and it can be tough to get rid of.

Klebsiella oxytoca is also associated with a type of colitis.

e. coli and salmonella can present with gi bleeding although, from what I understand, that's not especially common.

Are you thinking of C. difficile? That's the bug which Vancomycin supposedly eliminates. I think MitzMN had experience with that so hopefully she'll see your post & comment. Hope your skin graft has healed by now (both places)-- you sure have been put thru the wringer! So sorry to read that your UC is flaring badly again; I guess the Q at this point is whether you could tolerate any 5-ASA meds 'til the docs clear your return to immunosuppressants. No doubt all the antibiotics raised your colon's anger level! But, hey, that's terrific if you can stand on your feet for a bit & take a couple steps after such ordeals. We're all wishing you continued progress toward home in 2 months! Please keep us posted as your strength permits. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I believe you are talking about c diff as well. I had an infection two years ago that was resistant to Flagyll, but two courses of Vanco cleared it up after only three months. When I had a relapse a couple of months later, one course of Vanco did the trick, and I've been free of c diff since. Now if I could only say that say about my UC.

BTW, because c diff is becoming so common and resistant to the antibiotics multiple courses are often needed. If you have a problem with relapses, you might try to do pulse dosing. I read about it from someone with chronic c diff (I thought UC was bad, but I can't imagine living with that!). After your doc thinks it is cleared up, then take your normal dosage, only minus one dose a day for a week. Take a couple of days off, then do another week minus two doses. Continue this until you have tapered off completely. This useful only if you are c diff relapse prone though, and of course, discuss it with your doc before trying it. Good luck, and I hope the infection is short lived.

C.diff and it's nasty; I've had it before.... it has a unique nasty smell but you need a stool sample to dx it.

It took a few days on Vanco but it did clear up the C.diff. I don't know if this brings you any comfort but my GI was happy that I had C.diff on top of my flare; he said that C.diff is much easier to treat than a UC flare.

Thanks all, C Diff is what we were thinking of.  No word yet but I see that doc on Friday so I will update everybody then.  In the mean time thanks and love to all here.

Well, I've finally found the cause of my urinary tract infection. It also is a bacteria called Klebsiella pneumoniae which is a rod shaped bacterium found in the normal flora of the mouth, skin and intestines. It has escaped from my intestines and has caused the infection I have now. But we also need the bacteria in our colons also to keep it healthy. This bacteria I have is second to E-Coli for causing urinary tract infections in older people. And the antibiotic I have been on was macrobid 100mg for the urinary tract infection which has been ineffective. So I have been switched to Ciprofloxacin which is what is given to rid the body of that bacteria and clear up my urinary tract infection. I've never had anything like this in my life. And I've had bladder infections before. No wonder I have felt so bad for over a week. They sent my urine sample off to be cultured to find out the type of bacteria and that is what came back. This really stinks.

Klebsiella can be nasty stuff from what I understand.
