Because I am new on the Board....I was wondering...are there people out there with success stories about proctitis they can share?

What meds have kept you in remission? Did you change your diet? Doing anything holistic? Etc...

You can see my siggy....but I am in the tapering period w/ my prednisone. For some reason my Doc tells me to drop in 10mgs every 7 days. I have been on 40mgs of prednisone since July 8th and I dropped on Wednesday to 30mgs. I did TRY to drop last week and 2 days later the bleeding started.

Welcome to HealingWell. I hope you find the people here as helpful and supportive as I have. I have proctosigmoiditis, and have been on a lot of different medications without achieving remission. Finally got there with Remicade.

You may be tapering too quickly. Try decreasing by 5 mg. every 7-10 days. It will take longer, but could be successful. Then again, many of us become steroid dependent and flare every time we try to wean off. And you definitely don't want to use steroids long-term.

I do have one request, WishfulMA. We ask that signatures be limited to no more than ten lines, including blank lines. The forum administrator requests this to help save on bandwidth, so it would be appreciated if you can edit yours down to ten lines. Thanks, and welcome again to HealingWell!

Welcome. I have Ulceraative Proctitis, diagnosed this year. I do well with 6 asacol a day and canasa kind of as needed.. I use probiotics and take vitamins. I feel better when I am eating healthy and drinking water. It sounds like you've been through a lot more than me. I hope you feel better soon. Take Care, Bellski

I highly recommend rectal meds, I like cortifoam myself for when my proctitis acts up, it's a steroid foam and since it hits the spot directly in the rectom it usually works much quicker than oral meds and little to no side-effects because not near the amount of steroid is entering your blood stream like with oral pred.

Keep using rectal meds and then slowly taper off when you feel things are "back to normal".

I guess that is what I am worried about....I got off steriods back in April and then flared back up in the beginning of June. I am going to remain on the 30mgs till Tuesday and then I guess drop by 5mgs?! But why hasn't my Doctor suggested 5mgs drops? Last night when I spoke to her I said, "so far so good on the 30mgs"..."what if I flare this weekend" ...she said ..."go back to 40mgs". Its just scaring me. I want to move forward and at least know that I will not need 6MP or Remicade...I want to start up IVF again as soon as I am in remission (for a month). I am just in such limbo.

I have had great success with Salofalk suppositories (500mg) (I think it is the same as Canasa???). It works within 12 hours and after a week I can start weaning off. I find when I am tapering and only using one per day, it works best if I use them at bedtime, rather than morning, not sure why.
