NSAIDS before scope prep??

Does anyone know the reason they say you shouldn't take NSAIDs before drinking the colonoscopy prep? Is it because there is already a risk of kidney damage? I have a serious headache at the moment and Tylenol hasn't made a dent in it, but I'm worried about taking anything stronger because I have my EGD/colonoscopy on Wednesday and on the prep instructions it says not to take NSAIDs. sad

I think I might have one Imitrex tablet left at home but if not I'm going to have to do something.

I think it's because NSAIDs can increase the chance of bleeding during any kind of surgery. Since they take biopsies during the c-scope, they don't want your chance of bleeding to increase. I don't know what to tell you to do though...I totally understand how you feel. I get bad headaches all the time and the only thing that works is Aleve (an NSAID). Do the prep instructions say how far beforehand you should avoid NSAIDs? Which prep are you taking?

IBDers are suppose to avoid NSAIDs all together, before scopes or not as it promotes bleeding in the bowels.

pb4 - As a general rule, yes, you're right...They can promote bleeding...key word is "can." I have gotten permission from 3 different GIs to take NSAIDs occasionally, as they are the only thing that help me with my headaches and they do not affect my UC at all.

I know :( I did end up having Imitrex at home so I was really happy about that. But I ended up feeling horrendously ill by the time I got off work; I had to speed home and kick my boyfriend out of the bathroom because I felt like I was going to vomit, but I ended up just having a lot of D. It was really weird. I forced down a piece of toast and some chicken broth and felt a little better, then I ate a popsicle and went to bed. I still have a headache today which sucks, I think it's just the lack of food. Luckily it will all be over tomorrow and hopefully the drugs and IV fluids during the scope will make me feel a lot better.
