My mother was (finally) diagnosed with UC in May after having flare-ups and remissions for the past 8 years. She's still very sick and was recently discharged from hospital to nursing home on Monday. She's currently on Remicade (3rd infusion two weeks ago), methotrexate each week, and cholestyramine, as well as a host of other things (Prilosec, Seroquel, Celexa, Aricept, Xanax, Levothyroxin, and Wellbutrin) for complications including depression, anxiety, memory loss, nausea etc. She has a GI doctor in town and has been seen by others within the same group while she was in the hospital, but she'd like to get a second opinion as far as medications and treatment options go. She seems somewhat stabilized at 8-12 stools/day, but doesn't seem to be getting much better than that despite all the meds, and the disease is taking a heavy emotional toll. She's very resistant to surgery.
Any good/bad experiences with GI specialists in UT? Any suggestions for new meds? Any words of encouragement?
Thanks,
Mike
