I have been trying to understand why my symptoms of UC are back.  Anyway, I see you tried Asacol and Rowasa and now taking Colazal.  You know I took Canasa, Protofoam and then started Colazal.  Because 6 Colazal and the protofoam were not finsihing the job - doctor put me on Rowasa nightly and 9 Colazal.  Then the side effects kicked in - so I backed off to 2 Colazal a day (assuming that was where I was getting the side effects).  Then I stopped both because I got so sick.  I was only using about 1/2 Rowasa a night.  So, when I went to NP she said apparently I could not tolerate the Colazal (even though I took them quite a while) so suggested (after nearly 3 weeks of no medication and tiny symptoms of UC)

to use the Rowasa every other night hoping to remain in partial remission anyway - until she talked to doctor and calling me tomorrow.  So - bottom line - I used Rowasa Friday night and been sick since - today symptoms of UC are back at least about 1/2 - blood, D, cramping, etc.

Do you believe it is the enemas and not the pills.  I assume I will have to try pills and no enema to find out, huh?

Sounds like maybe you do have a sensitivity to mesalamines and the Rowasa can very well be your culprit. But like you said, you won't know unless you just try Colazal without the enema first. If you have troubles with Colazal too then it can be that you just tolerate any 5-ASA's.

My thoughts too - thanks for confirming the possibility - don't want to sound too stupid with the doctor or NP.  I am so new at this.

If ANY doctor makes you think you are stupid, then it's time to find a new doctor! My GI still shakes his head because he finds it hard to believe that I can't use the mesalamines but I'm fine with the basalazide because according to him, they're the same med. Which they are, but they aren't - the delivery system is different as well as maybe a molecular change that I just can't seem to tolerate. You just have remember that this is your body and you should know what you can use and what you can't. I'm afraid though that if you are unable to use any form of 5-ASA, you may have to resort to steroid enemas (not foam) and if you get increasingly worse you might have to consider an immune suppressing medication. Because unfortunately, that is where the road ends up if you can't tolerate 5-ASA's.

Thanks for being honest.  I think I know most of this.  At my age it is hard to believe I even have UC.  Anyway, maybe I could get it under control and stop long enough to have the knee replacement surgery.  I NEED that so bad - I can barely walk and must use a walker or cane.  I am 70 lbs. overweight due to inactivity and don't want to be an invalid.  You know I can keep everything pretty much under control with Imodium and maybe resort to that if nothing else.

I feel all this will resolve itself sooner or later - see what the doctor thinks next.  I will stay in touch with the forum.
