have any of you guys ever gotten gastroenteritis

a couple of weeks ago i was in the middle of moving into my new house and we went to the mall to eat dinner. about an hour after out of nowhere i had the urge to go to the bathroom. i was cramping really bad. i ran to the bathroom and had diarhea. my stomach was hurting so bad and i had nausea and my chest was hurting. i was sent to the hospital, waited 8h before seeing a doctor. they took blood test everything looked good. they said your probably in a flare so they put up my dose of asacol 3asacol 2x a day. a few days later i went to go see my GI and he told me i got a gastroenteritis. i ate something that was no good. have you guys ever gotten that. did it take you guys a long time to recover from it? my GI said it was gonna take time before everything got back to normal. its been 2 weeks and i stil get really bad cramping in the morning.

A couple years ago I ate at a McDonalds out of state and had the most horrible cramps and D. These cramps would come and go but boy I thought I was going to die from the pain! I think mine was from food poisoning not gastroenteritis (which btw is a fancy word for stomach "flu"). But I know how horrible those cramps can be. The last time I had a stomach bug - I was in remission and my daughter gave it to me ugh! - it took about a week or 2 before I started feeling better. I think with us, since we have such delicate intestine that any sort of bug can get bad. So maybe the cramping is from this bug causing you to flare? You can always call your doc to see if he can give you an anti-spasmodic to help with the cramping.

My only experience is with antibiotic-induced problems. It usually takes me about a month to get back to normal, that's with increased doses of probiotics. It isn't a UC flare, just the abx diarrhea a lot of people get. What's changed is that now almost every abx gives it to me, and it takes longer to go away.

Try doubling up on your usual probiotic to see if that helps.

I am just getting over a case of this myself.  8 weeks ago I ate something on the weekend and within a few hours I had liquid diahrea.  I just thought at the time that it was my hormones because I am pregnant or was a flare starting.  Well I was at my GI's office 2 weeks before this and they said you are still in remission all tests came back normal, and should remain in remission until the end of your pregnancy.  Well for 8 weeks the watery diahrea did not stop,  I tried fibre, increasing my meds, rectal meds nothing was helping then last weekend it just ended.  There was no more diahrea, blood from the irritation and I was finally able to eat again.  I am still not sure what I ate but it lasted 8 weeks.  Now BMs are solid again, and I am slowly regaining my energy because it just drained me of everything.

I did have it happen a few times in my lifetime. Vomitting or diarrhea episodes...a few times were pure diarrhea, the one that I suspect as the trigger of UC that lasted 3 weeks.

Twice I had puking and diarrhea at the same time. It was horrific.

We never know what we ingest..fingers in our mouths picked up from wherever. I can't totally blame it on the food specifically, for some could be coincidental or who prepared pr served it.

Ever notice that old people with canes press the elevator button with them ? Those things are everywhere..through dog poo, spit, bathrooms..etc. ugh.

probiotics, handwashing and keeping our fingers out of our mouths are a good start. Everything else is out of our control.

I had gastroenteritis when I had h-pylori. I either got it from the h-pylori or I picked up something else along with it. I was 15 though so I don't remember much, but I do remember that I was cramping differently than I do with my UC. Yucky Yucky Yucky

i had gastro really bad ..only lasted a day or 2. was puking and crapping everywhere. in the middle of bad flare too. yuck!
its very contagious.. gave it to my hubby and he was sick as a dog for a few days as well.
not fun at all!!!!
