I had minor surgery right before my first UC attack. I had out patient surgery for a deviated septum (I had terrible issues with sinus infections). Two days after the surgery, I got so sick...24 hours worh of diarrhea, black stools and a fever. I had just turned 16. My parents took me back to this surgeon, a guy I hated (he was mean and nasty to me when my parents weren't in the room.). He had precribed some kind of antibiotic after the surgery. Anyway, he just looked at me, told my parents to give me aspirin and I would be fine and keep the antibiotics going.. So my parents were giving me aspirin every four hours plus antibiotic. I got worse. My parents took me back to him and the darn doctor acted like I was faking it and insisted they keep doing the same thing. My dad got so angry and we left (he had been told this doctor was like well known and the best.). We went straight from there to the regular family doctor......who took one look at me and said if we saw no improvement by the moring, I was to come back to him. I got in the office the next day, even sicker and he admitted me to the hospital where I needed six blood transfusions.
To this day, I wonder if the combination of the antibiotic and the aspirin did me in. But it was back in 1961 and my parents just wanted me to get well. But of course UC is chronic and I would never be the same as before. In today's world, they have had a lawsuit.....but back then, no one did that.
However, I take clindamyacin when needed (not often) because my family has a history of severe allergic reations to penicillin.
So far I have done OK with it.
