I was diagnosed with severe UC in Feb. 2006. I was put on prednisone and azathioprine(Imuron). I got through my flare up, but never returned to normal. After a few months I was weaned off the prednisone and continued to take the Azathioprine. I started doing some research on natural ways to deal with the UC or if certain foods might help or hinder. By July 06 we had to move out of state and away from my Doctor. I also do not have insurance. I stopped taking the Azathiprine since my script ran out and couldn't afford to see another Doctor. By the end of September 2006 I was having another flare up. Going to the bathroom all the time, 103 fevers, blood in my stool. So I sucked it up and went to a GI. I started up on a low dose of prednisone again and He put me on Colazil(not sure of the spelling) a better drug he said then the Azthioprine, but cost $300 a month. He also wanted to do another Colonoscopy etc... I paid his fee($250) went home and cried. I couldn't afford to take care of myself. So I went back to alternative ideas. Milk allergies kept coming up. I was allergic to milk as a baby so I decided to forget the prescription medicine and stay off all milk products. Easier said then done. Milk is in everything. And I mean everything. I did my best though. I have to say that I did cheat every now and then. I did begin to feel better and weaned off the prednisone. I still was not back to normal still went to the bathroom way more then normal, had tummy aches, felt like I couldn't go away from home for too terribly long. But no major flareups. This remained the case until this past summer. We had a very stressful busy spring and beginning at the end of June, I started to feel a little worse. I was having the fevers again, with the awful achiness and feeling tired. We went out of town to visit family for a month in July. I continued to not feel the best. Once we got home(Aug. 10th 2008) the flare up hit. I was having constant diarrhea, fevers, chills, cold sweats, night sweats, fatigue(which quickly turned into exhaustion). I couldn't get up for more then a minute or two. After a week or two of this, I was so weak and felt like an old lady. I am 5'5 and down to 110lbs(which is low for me, I never go below 118 which is also lower then I had been before the UC diagnosis). After about 2 weeks or so, I woke up one morning with extreme ankle pain in the front of my left ankle. This continued along with my other symptoms and gradually the pain engulfed my entire ankle and swelled a good deal. Now my ankle is continually swollen and painful. Last night it was so bad that I was in tears and could not walk at all. I also have this red circular lump show up on my right shin. Slightly painful. It did not get better or worse. I started putting peroxide on it and it seemed to improve, but now I am wondering if it has improved or simply moved a little to the left of my shin. Very weird. It is a hard lump probably the diameter of a golf ball(not as raised as a golf ball just the diameter of it). No head to it or pus. Just a bump. My diarrhea and fever seem to be slightly better. It just depends on the day. However my ankle is still swollen and that red lump is still there, and I do continue to have the achiness, night sweats and be extremely tired and have little energy. I am slightly concerned that there could be something else going on with my health along with my UC that I didn't notice because I am so used to being sick and having issues because of the UC. Of course there is a fear of cancer because of the Azathioprine and my symptoms fit in with certain cancers, but they are non specific and can fit with other diseases as well. I am scheduled to see a Doctor in a week. Does anyone have any advice? Should I go to another Doctor/walk in in the meantime and have my ankle checked out and maybe some bloodwork done? Or should I see if I can get into my appt sooner? Or should I just wait it out and see what happens in a week? Do I need to worry about cancer or am I just psyching myself out? Sorry for going on and on, just don't have anyone else to ask these questions!
Thank you!!
