Brandon - I sure know how frustrating this all is. When my side effects become worse than the UC I just had to quit - Colazal, Rowasa, and then Lialda. Using Canasa suppositories just until I see the doctor on Monday.
As for the problem with the knee surgery - had it all set up and then 3 days before started rectal bleeding. I had been diagnosed with UC but no tests for infection, etc. If I have any infection anywhere it would to directly to my new knee and it would have to be opened up again. So, I had all the tests and since then tried many meds to get into remission. Also, there is a big risk of blood clots with knee replacement and so they give you blood thinners which of course could cause more UC bleeding!
Knee replacement is an elective surgery and many will not do it unless you check out well in many areas - at least everything under control. I put a call in to the surgeon today to find out exactly the criteria for him to do surgery. First of all, think of me with a new knee -unable to walk without assistance having to go to the bathroom many times - not a pretty sight.
I just know now what I can't take (although it was working). My side effects were - nausea/sweating/dizzy/headaches/anxious (more than usual)/sleepy and worst of all - no appetite. I just could not leave the house.
Good luck to you - we will get a hold on this disease sooner or later - I know it!!
