I've been on Asacol for a few months now (3 pills 3 times a day).   Today I missed my mid-day dose.  Tonight I've had terrible D, but I also had a big dinner about three hours ago.  Is it the dinner doing this or could my missed dose have caused this kind of reaction?  I've never missed a dose before, so I have nothing to compare it to.  Do you Asacol users have any thoughts on this?  I'd love to hear from you.

I don't think the missed dose would make that much difference, especially that quickly. Even if you had the dose, it would probably still be in the process of getting to your colon and not even yet dissolved (the benefit of it is that it is medicine with a special coating so it won't dissolve until it reaches your colon).
Big meals are always risky...they stimulate your bowels...but I indulge now and then too!

A large meal sometimes cannot be digested entirely, which leaves partially-digested foodstuffs to enter the GI tract. This is very irritating to the gut walls. Try to eat no more at a single sitting than you could fit in two cupped palms pressed together. Of course you could just take a quality digestive enzyme and pig out like I do. :)

Its most likely the meal not the skipped dose.

I agree - it's the meal. A missed dose of Asacol wouldn't show up right away because according to my GI, Asacol builds up in the body. So even if you miss the dose, you still have medication in your system.

I'm on asacol too. I love big dinners as well! I'm totally scatterbrained, of the type that looks for half an hour for the glasses that are on her head, so I have missed a number of doses.

Nevertheless, Asacol has been really helpful for me, but atleast once every week or ten days, I have a day of diarrhea for no apparent reason. I think sometimes the disease just stirs in its slumber and then goes back to sleep.

Hi Sunshine! Thanks for asking - I'm doing a little better. Still have more D than I'd like. I'm trying that spinach and sunflower thing, and I know its not really agreeing with me right now. But its supposed to take a while to work, so we'll see. I'm going away for the weekend with my husband, so I'm excited to have some grown-up time; however, my son will be with my parents, and I know I'll miss him TERRIBLY. I guess that's the price I'll have to pay for a little freedom. I just hope the 3 1/2 hour drive won't be peppered with stops to gas station bathrooms. Yuck. Hopefully by then things will have cleared up a little.

How are you doing? Any fun stuff planned for the weekend?

what dose of prednisone are you on again? I am suppose to go to 10mg today. No plans for the weekend, just family time. You will have a good time, how fun!!

Actually, I'm not on pred. Good luck with your lower dose. I hope you don't run into trouble (fingers crossed!). Hope you have a good weekend - family time is my favorite time! :-)

Road trips are such a pain! I find 1/2 an immodium will calm my gut (but keep things from blocking up too much) and make them more tolerable.
