Mesalamine Enema questions...

Last night I did my 3rd mesalamine enema. I am currently on 15mg of Prednisone and Asacol oral (12 pills per day) - was diagnosed in Aug w/UC.

Here is my issue/concern:

Within 5 minutes of administering the enema...I have bubbling / popping/ gassy sensation in my lower abdomen.  I then I have to do everything possible to hold back any urge to go the bathroom.

I sleep fine but wake up in the morning with explosive diarrhea!

Should i give the enema time to work or this an indication that it may not work for me?????

FYI....I am limited to the medications I can use - after bloodwork/enzyme testing it is shown that I cannot use the 6MP meds because of the risk of lymphoma.  I am the 1 in 800 who cannot take it!

Sounds like it might be air from the top of the enema - there was talk of this on a post a few days ago - I think it was 'mesalimine enema - am I doing it right?' . As someone said you should be able to squeeze the air out before inserting

I agree with Hans - squeeze the air out of the bottle before inserting. You can even try warming it up a bit before administering - this can help ease the urge to expel. And yes, give the enema a bit more time to do it's magic. It can take a week or two before you see any benefit from it. If after a couple weeks you don't improve, call up your doctor.

I am usually unable to keep the enema in beyond four or five hours, but it does seem my body expels it fairly forcefully so perhaps it is the nature of the medicine and our diseased colon combined that is to blame for the "explosive" phenonmonon.    Also, I found that taking the Asacol and the enema daily was just too much and seemed to make my diarrhea worse. When I backed off on the enema a bit,  as my doc suggested the diarrhea did improve.

As for that initial sensation that makes it hard to keep the enema in - I found two things helped.  One was to angle the bottle exactly the way it is suggested in the instructions and the other is to insert the nozzle as far as it can go before squeezing any out.

Try using only 1/2 the bottle. The WHOLE bottle did the same thing to me. I've been using them for years now. smilewinkgrin

thanks to all replies.... my diarrhea is worse the past 3 days since starting the enemas
I think I will try using 1/2 tonight and see how the D is in the morning
