I can relate to your son very well I was once in his shoes. I don't know of any specifically for IBD, but I would say try to find something low in sugar and organic if possible.. Personally I avoid all protein shakes or weight gainers because they give me way too much gas. I am still gaining weight though through proper diet. Just tell him if he is serious about wanting to gain weight, make a list of foods he can tolerate, then calculate the calorie content and protein content in each food. Once he's done that, tell him to set up his diet aiming for 3000-3500 calories a day and about .7grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
I am not a huge guy but I have put significant muscle onto my skinny frame over the last couple of years. If he follows these simple tips in time he can do the same in time.
- To get big you need to do exercises that recruit the most muscle fibers at once, exercises like bench press, clean and press, squat, barbell rows, chin ups and snatches are the best for gaining serious strength and size.
- A proper warmup and stretch is very important to get the blood flowing and muscles loose so they can lift more and also helps to avoid injury. A cool down and stretch is just as important.
- Rest, rest, and REST.. If you feel tired or your muscles are sore, DONT WORK OUT. Working out is not what gets you big, the rest periods between workouts is when the muscle building occurs.
- Patience is the most important part. In time he will gain size, but it wont happen over night.
I could talk for days on this subject, if he has any questions feel free to ask i'd love to help, as I said before I can relate very much so to him as I was once in his position.
