My doctor and I are at the point where surgery is a REAL option. He has run out of ideas since we have tried just about everything.  In fact, he recommended me to another GI for a second opinion.

I know that there are a lot of surgery posts out there the latest being Paul's ( he is still recovering but giving us great posts). You sounded so upbeat, I wanted to know if I could ask you some questions- maybe outside of this forum??

I am not Christine but I did have jpouch surgery when I was 42. Best decision of my life. I have a very full active life and just returned from a 2 week hiking trip in Turkey followed by a week of travel in the Middle East. Surgery is a difficult decsion with a long recovery but for most of us we have never regretted the decision. I recommend you visit www.j-pouch.org for support and information.

Question- If I have my rectum removed can I still have a j-pouch? Every part of my colon and rectum is diseased.

The jpouch surgery involves removing both the colon and rectum.  If the rectum is left the disease would remain.  A tiny portion of the rectal cuff (1-2cm) is left to connect the pouch to the anus.  In my case the rectum was the most diseased portion; my colon was fairly healthy.  But both organs had to go.
