Hi All,
I've been reading recently how whole grains and resistant starches which would include things like corn flakes, porrige oats, brown rice have been tested on UCers and the results are all very positive with people's symptoms improving significantly together and the mechanism seems to be that bacteria feed on the starch and make butyrate - the Short Chain Fatty Acid (SCFA) that has itself vie enema been proven to reduce UC symptoms (also butyrate is present in lower levels of people wit UC compared to 'normal' people). I think one study had 3/20 people relapse over 9 or 12 months where-as 14/20 relapsed in the control group! Also my only time in remission I was eating porrige oats every day but I didn't know about this then I was eating them because they are full of soluble fibre to ease BM's and D.
So that sounds great - eat whole grains and starches, bacteria make butyrate, which then alleviates or eliminates UC symptoms.
But this morning I have abdominal pain which I have not had for a while and the only difference I can think is I had a big meal of stirfry with brown rice yesterday - I'd normally have white rice but thought I'd try move onto brown rice and whole grain stuff but it doesn't seem to like me.... Also I started eating cornflakes again but started that a few days ago so don't think it's that...
How do you get on with whole grains starches and fibre? I guess it's also different in remission than flares... perhaps I just need to start in small quantities and work up?
