Hello Everyone:

My mom has ulcerative colitis and was in a recent flare that lasted a long time and thankfully she is doing a lot better (knock on wood), however recently about two weeks ago she began to notice a lot of joint stiffness, in her hands, between her thumbs and wrists, and soreness also in her biceps area where the muscle is (she struggles to lift her arms up), and she has joint soreness in her thighs as well. Her current medicine lists includes:

Imuran 150 mg a day

Asacol 1600 mg a day (8 a day)

Prednisone (she has tapered this slowly and is now down to 10 every other day)

Canasa/Rowasa suppos every other day

Initially I thought it may be the prednisone withdrawal, but her soreness has been consistent in her arms hands and thighs, and in the past when she withdrew from prednisone, it was her shoulders.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any suggestions? Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

I am not on Prednisone, but I am on canasa and asacol. I started my first flare ever mid may 2008 and officially diagnosised 8/08. Being said, all my joints ache, bottoms of my feet wake me up in the middle of the night like I have been standing on them working all day, my hands swell in the middle of the night and hand joints hurt, the rest of my joints through out my body hurts, my bottom and the upper part of the back of my legs ache - sorry to say this is part of this disease.

This disease is also very individualistic. What works for one may not work for the other. What hurts on one uc patient may not hurt on another. Does this make sense?

Anyway, I will pray for your mom and that she heads to remission quickly. Hope I've been of some help.

Joint pain can be associated with UC - it's referred to as UC arthritis. Withdrawing from Pred can also cause joint pain. Either way, it may get better when she gets into remission. In the meantime, I'd suggest Tylenol Arthritis formula every 8 hours. Since Tylenol takes longer to work than NSAIDS, taking it routinely can prevent the pain from ramping back up between doses. It's much more effective for pain when taken routinely rather than waiting for the pain to come back.

Hi Paul,

      You sound like a wonderful, concerned son and your mom is lucky to have you.

       Yes, I also have joint pain.  I try to persevere with it.  Too much Tylenol can cause liver damage and the meds I take can do a number on the liver.  RA runs in my family.
