liver problems with uc

I am new to this forum, but my husband is scheduled for surgery on dec 18th and we have just heard about a few people that have had liver problems because of colon removal.  At least the people we have talked to said it was because of removing the colon.  I have tried to research it and it just seems like uc and liver problems are linked not just because of removal.  Can anyone shed some light on this or had any experience with liver and colon problems?  We have already rescheduled the surgery twice and I am sick of it and he is WAY sick of it, we just want to do it.  But I want to get all the facts.  THANKS for any help you can offer.

Does your husband already have liver problems?

I've not heard about liver problems happening after colon removal unless there already is a problem undiagnosed...but I haven't done the research either.

I have UC-related liver disease, and my thought is that if my colon is kept calm/quiet..the liver disease doesn't progress as quickly, so my thought would be that if one has UC-related liver disease, it wouldn't be as much as a problem as would if the colon were still intact but in constant inflammation.

Again, don't know for sure.

The main question is still...does he have liver problems or is it suspect at this time? Are his liver enzymes elevated?

He doesn't have any liver problems at this time that we know of.  I think we will have them check it out and that way we know ahead of time that there shouldn't be a problem.  I think that you have to already have the problem to begin with other wise it wouldn't be related to it because your colon would be gone.  So thank you.  I appreciate any info on this.  thanks

nervouswife, you've got part of it on both counts. Having the surgery does not cause the liver problems. Often, they are detected near the time of the surgery because so much other testing is done before it. But having the surgery also does not protect you against later developing the liver problems that are associated with UC. One can still get them even once the colon is gone. (My GI, who specializes in the liver problems, says that the course of the liver disease and that of the UC are totally unrelated. You can have very mild UC and serious liver disease, or vice versa.)

I definitely would not let that get in the way. My own improvement in quality of life from the surgery has been outstanding. Best of luck to your husband!

The predisposition would have to be there, and since it progresses slowly, most symptoms aren't even recognised until they become more obvious or liver enzyme readings give a possible concern...and there would be nothing you can do to stop it anyway.

If your husband needs the surgery for colon removal...I would think quality of life would be more of a positive than the possibility of liver disease that you don't even know would happen.
