uc and throat redness, uvula inflammation/swelling

recently, i've been experiencing a swollen uvula and throat redness that won't go away. it's driving me insane because my uvula touches the back of my tongue. feels like it's difficult to breathe, which causes anxiety attacks. i've been to my internist regarding this, the first time, he shined his light down my throat and prescribed claritin-d--the second time, he prescribed azithromycin. neither worked. i was also prescribed pred, 20 mg for a week, which didn't help, really, either. this has been going on for about a month and is showing no signs of resolving itself. the last time i saw my dr., he mentioned something about wondering if this is related to my UC, and now he's out of the office until christmas eve, great.

it drives me crazy. anyone else experience these kind of symptoms? i am now only on asacol 3200 mgs a day for UC and have been in remission for a year and a half.

Hi..it wouldn't be UC related...but it could be reflux. Purchase some Zantac..150mg..take it twice daily and see if that helps. You'll have to swing the timing regarding your other meds...however...

My reflux affected my voice...colds do affect the larynx for me most often...but the reflux diagnosis when that was happening was a bit of a surprise.

The other thing it "might" be is your toothpaste. Some cause much discomfort in my mouth. It's not really an allergy, it's an irritation.....

You'll have to do some experimenting...

Are you gargling with any mouthwash? Sometimes that can be irritating on delicate tissue in the mouth.

Let us know how you do after trying the Prevacid. I wouldn't worry about the possibilities of CD just yet...and regarding UC...well it's always possible in an indirect way, but it's always easy to connect something that's obvious.
The internist did give it a fair shot regarding meds...since nothing worked, even the pred or allergy med...I'd still lean towards reflux.

Oh, have you yet seen an ENT? If not, I would put that on your list. The both times I saw mine, the tube down the nose to see what was going on defintely gave the diagnosis. Once infection in the larynx, the other time reflux. Who'd've thunk?

All our health issues are subjective..while it's good to keep things in perspective, using others as a measuring stick for yourself can be more stressful.

Happy to hear you went to the ENT. I had the same situation, which caught me by surprise actually.

The reflux is a gastro disorder...so, your GI might want to do a check to make sure there aren't any lesions created in the esophagus from the acid.

Hope the Nexium helps and that you feel better soon.

I used nasonex..smelled awful and I ended up with a sinus infection...but...that doesn't mean it won't work for you. I hear they changed the formula and doesn't smell.

I too, am having the swollen uvula. It does drive you crazy! However, I had pharyngitis first-took Z-pack, then I went to a different Dr., because a week later I have ulcers in my mouth and red sore throat! So , they only gave me magic mouthwash. I'm already taking Nasonex and Omeprazole. The mouthwash is like snot so it's very difficult to use. It really makes me wonder if it's not related to all of our intestinal woes, though. Oh, also they did a throat culture...Normal - no strep. So now I'm just gonna pray. Probably should have done that first. LOL!

There are mouth sores that are related to UC...but one would have to have that diagnoses as such.

If one gets them often, then do get them checked out as you did sickliz77.

Did the doctor take a swab?

Magic Mouthwash (as I read) seems to have lots of stuff in it to cover a pee-pot full of possibilities...I would think that if you have it, you should use it. I can only imagine that the texture would be difficult to use. Are you supposed to swallow it afterward?

Keep us posted as to the whether it's working or not.
