Hi! I'm new here and really enjoying this forum. So much information here. I hope this post can maybe give an alternative to you who are having trouble with the normal UC meds.

20 yearsish ago, I started with colitis. I was engaged to a doctor at the time, and he told me what I had, and bottled up a bunch of drugs and in his handwriting, wrote the name of the drug on some masking tape on the bottle. It was a miracle!! I would get a flare up, take the drug, and no more cramps!! I loved that drug!! Soon the flare ups went away, and I forgot about it for all these years.

Two weeks ago, it hit again! This time with bleeding! I remembered that bottle (he gave me a ton of those pills), and I also remembered he would laugh and tell me "Drugs don't expire! That is what the Drug companies tell you so you will keep buying!" Sooooooo, I thought I'd take one of those pills. Again! It worked! After 2 days no more blood, and I get cramps every 4 days or so, and I take a pill and all is well.

I worried that I would run out of these pills. Did I mention I have no insurance, so a doctor visit is out of the question financially. I decided to look on the web to see if I could buy some without a prescription! I learned that that drug is not available. There is a reason which I will mention in the next paragraph. But, from all the posts on the web, I have ordered some Asacol to try for my next flare up. I'll die if I run out of the good stuff!!

Why doctors today don't prescribe it is amazing, but if you are having trouble with Asacol, and all those other drugs you are taking, ask your doctor to prescribe Donnatal. It is a real drug. Serious! Phenobarbitol. Look it up on Drugs.com. It is prescribed for UC. It is addictive, but not for me. I only take it now and then as needed. Drug companies spend a lot of time and money researching the drugs they peddle, and they give doctors incentives to prescribe them. Donnatal is an old drug, been around forever, and doubtful anyone is giving incentives for it.

I will be getting insurance in the next few months (medicare), and I will pitch a fit to my new doc if he doesn't listen to me and prescribe Donnatal!!

If my fiance was alive now, I'd get more from him, but he's sitting on a cloud laughing at the drug companies!!

I spend time over at curezone also, and I am going to try Sherman's Vitamin E enema and diet. He swears it will cure you in 3 months. If you haven't looked at that, you may want to do so.

There's a warning on that drug for people with UC or stomach ulcers. Most of the antispasmodics we take will affect this drug too so keep that in mind. If you have IBS it could be helpful. If you want to control all that spasm that happens with intestines at times with UC this may help, but as far as I can tell there's nothing in there that's going to help with the bleeding. There are antispasmodics out now that are not habit forming that I think I would take before this. Big difference between IBS, Colitis, and Ulcerative Colitis.

Yes, many drugs should not be combined with others, and a doctor would not prescribe donnatal without disclaimers, but for those who have so many allergies and bad reactions to the commonly prescribed drugs, it may be an alternative.

My bleeding has stopped probably due to the fact I am mainly eating poached eggs, herb teas, and bananas with a little fish, chicken and baked potato now and then. Nothing raw.

I've read a ton on these forums since I am without insurance, and from what I've read the bleeding can mainly be controlled by diet, eating gentle foods that will allow healing. There is interesting information from Sherman over at curezone on that vitamin E (supposed to heal ulcers and sores) enema and diet.

OMG!! My apologies to Sheldon! He does have good things to say over there at curezone, and I'm glad it helped you! Thanks for alerting me that it's Sheldon and NOT Sherman!

The thing is there is a woman on the web who has written a book and she is selling it of course. 5 easy ways to get rid of your UC, something like that. She got her info for free, and now she sells it!! Makes me livid!! But Sheldon's info is free at curezone. and it's probably a lot better than what she has to say. Sorry I don't have a link to her or anything. Just made me mad she wouldn't give her 5 tips for free when she freely received them.

I'm going to start that vitamin E enema and diet in a couple weeks. Once you commit to it, you need to do it, and I have too many social events coming up that will prevent me from doing it right. I'm glad it helped you!

Simple description of Sheldon's Cure. It will take 3 months! You must commit to it. On the opening page,in upper right small Curezone Google search window, type vitamin E enema. Posting issue 64 will give you the procedure information. Additional information on the opening page at Curezone Support Forms(TOP). Find form "vitamin E enema" #116

You have to buy one of those blue ear drop bulbs, and you will use this for your 100% natural vitamin E enema. You will only use distilled water. Henry's Market has a gallon for 99 cents. Only one enema a day is necessary. The amount of vitamin E increases, so you need to read his instructions.

the diet consists of vegetables (no skins) steamed or cooked in distilled water, wild caught fish, chicken breast (poached or baked), eggs, Unsulphered Molasses, Brown Rice, tapioca.

I hope that helps. You should drink the steaming or boiling water because the vitamins are in there.

I think it is workable because you can have a real meal. Brown rice, fish or chicken, and veggies!! And eggs!!

I can commit for 3 months AFTER the Bob Hope Classic!

     I am in remission right now...since Nov 1st..yippee, but know this will return.  Let me know how you make out on this Sheldon thing.  Not to burst your bubble, but there is no cure for IBD, only removal of the colon.  I do wish you well though.

     Phenybarbitol.....isn't that what they give for seizures?  I remember our oldest daughter had convulsions from running high fevers...turned out to be tonsilitis which was misdiagnosed by two doctors...anyway that is another long story...and that is what they had her on.

     YES doctors get kickbacks from drug companies for pushing their products and I know for a fact Remicade is one drug that doctors LOVE to push and they get "perks" for doing so.

I want to caution you about advocating "cures." At this time the only known cure for UC is surgery. Using the word cure for other therapies is misleading at best.

And this discussion is once again veering toward a political debate, which is not the purpose of this forum. Let's please stay on topic and not flame anyone - either other members or non-members. If you believe your doctor is treating you to benefit a drug company instead of you, find another doctor or don't see a doctor. Find a natural "doctor", a curandera, a brujera, a witch doctor, a faith healer or the practitioner of your choice. That's fair.
