Well European Journal of Medical Research Published a report on January 20, 1997 related to "the Effects of Boswellia Serrata Gum Resin (Sallaki) in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis". The report was based on a research carried out by Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Phamaceutical Science, Tuebingen, Germany, Institute of Medical INformation Processing, Germany in association with Department of Medicine, Government Medical College, Jammu & Kashmir, India, Regional Research Laboratory, J & K, India. In patients suffering from UC the effect of Boswellia serrata gum resin (Sallaki) prepartion (350mg thrice daily for 6 weeks) on stool properties, histopathology, and scanmicroscopy of rectal biopsies, blood parameters including Hb, serum iron, calcium, phosphorous, proteins, total leukocytes and eosinophils was studied. Patients receiving sulfasalazine (1g thrice daily) served as controls. All parameters tested improved after treatment with Boswellia serrata gum resin, the results being similar compared to controls with Sazo; 82% out of treated patients went into remission; in case of sulfazine remission rate was only 75%.
The data of this study showed for the first time that the gum resin of Boswellia Serrata known in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as Sallai guugal (Sallaki) induces remission in patients with UC grade II-III in about 80% when applied three times daily 350 mg over a period of 6 weeks. This effect is similar to that of current treatment with sulfasalazine. Although the superiority of Sallai guggal (Sallaki) cannot be confirmed statistically over sulfasalazine treatment, the data suggest that it is at least not inferior. Improvement of disease is evident by disapperance of physical symptons, (abdominal pains, abnormal stool parameters), restoration of endoscopic and histological disorders as well as a variety of pathological blood parameters related to the severity of the disease. The study came to conclusion that because of the severity of the disease, the side effects of some of the drugs used in the current therapy and for economical reasons it is justified that this natural product in a standardized form should be used in patients with UC.
I myself, used it on several occasions and found respite. I went into remissions after taking Sallaki. INfact my brother has been constantly on Sallaki and got lot of help in controlling flare ups.
