Salofalk Enemas...another question

Hello all,

Anyone have issues with these as far as the diarrhea getting worse?

Since I started on them, most of my BMs are very "liquidy", not only the first of the day.

yep, it can....and I welcome a looser stool going through an inflamed butt.

It does improve as you improve.....are you improving at all in any aspect?

sucks for sure, and as I look back, I can truly relate...but it's only 6 days... you are worse in what respects exactly?

Definitely more watery diarrhea...(like peeing out of my bum) that's basically all that's coming out of me as well as there being a red tinge to what's in the bowl. Like you said earlier they do go through you a lot quicker and less painful but it seems to be within this last week of being on the Salofalk that it has changed for the worse...maybe it's just a coincidence. Little more rectal pain this time around as well with insertion of the enemas too. Beacuse there can also be blood on TP i may have something lingering for the bleeding, am still getting some of the clottly little things as well. Not even anything rmotely resembling a formed stool for te last 2 weeks...likely not smart to ramp up metamucil at this point. Urgency has also stepped up big time. That's it a in a nutshell other than 6-8 times a day I step into the washroom.

So many questions ...

I'd still give it a fair chance...or....you can add the foam enema in the morning and use the salofalk at night.

how far is the extent of your UC? seems not only proctitis.

How many asacol are you on?

One of the side effects of enemas is diarrhea.

I can't say for sure how far it is or whether it's travelled up further because my GI won't do any other testing for me with respect to my UP. He is insisting that my UP is moderate and I need not be concerned.

I think I've lost his nurse as a confidante as well, she has not returned one of my calls from the last week. I'm trying not to be too annoying but I'd still like some answers from the people who would know.

hmmm, too bad about the nurse....do you know how much was originally stated on the report?

how many times a day are you going?

What exactly are you wanting your doctor to answer for you?

Can you give it another week before worrying about it? With a tiny amount of blood, that's pretty good compared to before..right?

You could up the metamucil....

I can't recall exactly but I know within seconds of inserting the scope, it was "here's your problem right here".

I'm going about 4-6 times...all watery, not all bloody. First one after a long period of not going is bloody, then basically (from what I can tell) no blood in the subsequent ones.

I guess I'm having a hard time accepting the flare as just that. I keep thinking that because of the way I'm flaring that it is moving up the colon. I have asked several times about him giving things another look but he stands by his previous statement.

I had a couple when this flare really started back up that were totally red, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Upping the metamucil is where I was going to go next, but wasn't sure that was going to do me harm or good with the state of my BMs being basically watery the whole time.

Nice and sloppy out there today isn't it? Stock up on the WW Fluid!

Hi...well, if it's any consolation, I was in the bathroom 7 times today...6 in the late morning/afternoon....absolute writhing, white-knuckling...I was exhausted. I would have much preferred diarrhea.

There was a teeny abount of blood in the last one...in the granular looking stuff....alas I'm ticked too.

I used a proctocedyl suppository this afternoon, had another bm this evening...no where as bad.

I'm doing the enemas for at least a month nightly before even considering tapering. I've yo-yo'd enough for the past 2 months considering the varying stressors and the ups and downs with this flare. I don't usually do this, but if the inflammation is really low in the rectum, I guess the symptoms aren't as obvious. Kind of like "good enough" .

I'm still eating pretty normally....enough food for stool, but didnt use Metamucil for a few nights...forgot and didn't have time before my meds, etc...so that ultimately should help make a smoother exit..lol! I'll see tomorrow.

Regarding the metamucil caps...Are you only taking one? with what meal?

Do you take any meds with meals?...so don't do with them.

I'd either add another at another meal or double on the one you're taking....
Does it say to take up to 6 daily? You have a lot of wiggle room there.

Oh, hope the doc/nurse will call you back....

You did mention that you were improving...just that the diarrhea is now a problem. It might not have spread upward, just maybe the inflammation is a bit worse for the time being.

Oh, do you have any of the steroid enemas left?

Sorry to hear that you are now flaring as well...I brought you bad kharma! And I'm probably the other way around (or so I think) whereby I think I'd prefer a few white knucklers with results. I never enjoy the site of the blood.

proctocedyl suppository? Never heard of those.

I find doing the Salofalk that I'm getting up about 4am and the need comes to get rid of everything. The two last night were diarrhea blood filled again.

I'm eating normal but not sure how many of theses to use..I'd take 6 Metamucil a day if I knew it was going to help me.

My lack of anxiety lasted only for 1.5 days...not good but is not being helped by the fact they will not return a call. Plus my back pain seems to be getting much worse, though according to my blood tests I should not be worrying about anything serious with respect to that. But I am not sleeping, sleeping pills, or Ativan do not help me. (No, I don't take them together) This is part of the reason why, regardless of my blood work coming back ok, there must be something going on. Maybe I'll just head to emerg through the middle of the night one time, seeing how I'm not sleeping anyways.

Improving has taken a backseat for now after last night bleeding episode. Yeesh!

I do still have some of the Cortifoam left.

I found some info on when you should see results. It can take from 3 to 21 days it seems.

Recommended dosage for Pentasa

ADULTS

Rowasa Suspension Enema

The usual dose is 1 rectal enema (60 milliliters) per day, preferably used at bedtime and retained for about 8 hours. Treatment time usually lasts from 3 to 6 weeks, although improvement may be seen within 3 to 21 days.

Rowasa Suppositories

The usual dose is one rectal suppository (500 milligrams) 2 times a day. To get the most benefit from the suppository, it should be retained for 1 to 3 hours or longer.

Canasa Suppositories

The recommended dose is 1 rectal suppository (500 milligrams) 2 times a day for 3 to 6 weeks. To get the most benefit from the suppository, it should be retained for 1 to 3 hours or longer. The dosage may be increased to 3 suppositories daily if response is unsatisfactory after 2 weeks of therapy. For the 1,000-milligram suppository, the recommended dose is 1 rectal suppository at bedtime for 3 to 6 weeks. Improvement may be seen within 3 to 21 days.

Pentasa Capsules

The usual dose is 1 gram (four 250-milligram or two 500-milligram capsules) 4 times per day for a total of 4 grams. Treatment usually lasts for up to 8 weeks.

Asacol Tablets

The recommended dose for the treatment of ulcerative colitis is 2 tablets 3 times a day for 6 weeks.

To prevent a relapse, the usual dosage is 4 tablets a day, taken in 2 or more smaller doses, for 6 months.

CHILDREN

Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

oh my...don't go to the hospital yet...call the doc and ask if you can pick up some vials to do stool samples because you've gotten worse after taking the antibiotics.

Do the probiotics and up the metamucil...or buy the metamucil smooth (not the one that's sugar-free), and take it a few times a day.

You're letting your anxiety take hold...it's not an all or nothing disease...and not that you want to hear this...you're no way extreme or severe.

Blood is part and parcel...and it's not going to heal overnight. Again, there might be a bugaboo in there as well....the probiotics should help that part as well.

what do you think?

Hospital on a friday night....bad move...unless you're dying.

How are you doing on the enema? I have been on the Pentasa enema for about 10 days. I saw progress, but then one day I ate some bad sweets and I am sort of back to square 1. Hopefully the blood will be gone soon.

I've been off the enemas for a week or so on GI's orders. Not 100% sure, but they seemed to be messing me up. As Quincy put it, I had real Squirt Bum happening.

That issue seems to have somewhat resolved itself. Still having issues but not the explosive watery diarrhea like I was having.

How about the blood? Did it go away? I have been on them for about 10 days and there were times when I saw little blood and then days when I saw a lot.

BTW, how long are you supposed to use the enemas for? My GI gave me only enough for 2 weeks, and it seems I need to get a refill. I am not sure if this is a mistake or not.

I forgot to mention that I am going to try something a little different with the enema. I am going to put a pillow or blanket under my butt so that the enema gets farther down my colon. Hopefully it will help. I have awoken before at night to see that some of the enema had been released and made my PJs wet. I am not sure if it was a lot, but it is not good news.

If you're on 12 asacol, I don't see how you'll need to worry about getting it farther up the colon.

Personally, you should leave the most med in the rectum/sigmoid anyway.
