javascript
(I think) is what enables popups, but it also enables nasties to get your web browser to change things you might not want. So javascript
is not bad when used as it should be Sweetpea, but it is when a virus writer uses it to do things that are not good for you. Most web pages are okay, but you can't be entirely sure; if their design is poor, web pages can be "hijacked" and when you click on a link your computer is bombarded with viruses etc. The answer is firewalls, and security software that will not run javascript
unless you say "yes, I want to
open this popup" - a popup blocker. But you have to be very wary of software that says it will protect you against "malware" - some of it actually puts viruses onto your computer while pretending to make you secure !
To find out what is good, look for security software reviews on computer forums, by using a search engine or reading a computer magazine like "Computeractive". There are about
600 organised crime gangs in Russia alone spending millions trying to hack into every computer and website they can in order to steal money or identities, so it really is vital to keep up with what is happening. We are very lucky to be on a website like this one, with such good technical support to filter out spam and such like. Smaller forums have real problems with security.
Nerdy bit over.
If it helps keep Healingwell afloat, I would say a popup is a mighty small price to pay.
